A bee alighted on the chrysanthemum,

    And behold—honey in the hive.

And after it, along the branches crawled

A worm—and the boughs were bare.

And rain poured upon the fields, and in them were

    Leafy trees and flowers.

And it fell upon the sands to revive them,

So the two were a corpse and a grave.

I am rain; so if I find you to be a field,

Then I am the grass and the trees.

But when I find you to be sand,

    I am nothing—not even rain.

And I am the chrysanthemum; it is all one to me

Whether I live a day or part of a day.

I care not about perishing, if my glory

Or my people's glory lies in perishing.

If my colors vanish into a butterfly,

Then I am in a flower that flies.

And when my being dissolves into the light,

Then I am fragrance in the morning light.

    إِنَّهُ المَصرَعُ الكَريه

    Keep me from perishing among worms;

Indeed, that is the loathsome death,

And the loss of fragrance and colors,

And obliteration with no glory in it.

Be a ray in which my being is revealed,

    Not darkness, nor dust.

And let me live in the light a few seconds,

For they are better than a thousand years.
