بَيني وَبَينَ العُيونِ سِرٌّ
اللَهُGod فيin السِرِّthe secret وَالعُيونand the eyes
اللَهُ في السِرِّ وَالعُيون
Between me and the eyes is a secret.
Between me and the eyes is a secret,
God is in the secret and in the eyes.
And God is in the secret and the eyes.
إِذاwhen عَصَتdefy فِكرَتيmy thought القَوافيthe rhymes
إِذا عَصَت فِكرَتي القَوافي
أَوحَتinspire لِنَفسيto my soul بِهاwith them الجُفونthe eyelids
أَوحَت لِنَفسي بِها الجُفون
When the rhymes defy my thought,
If rhymes rebel against my thought,
The eyelids inspire my soul with them.
The eyelids inspire my soul with them.
هاتِbring it اِقِنيgive me to drink (likely intended as اسقني) الخَمرَthe wine جَهراًopenly
هاتِ اِقِني الخَمرَ جَهراً
وَلاand do not تُبالِcare بِماabout what يَكونhappens
وَلا تُبالِ بِما يَكون
Bring it—give me wine to drink openly,
Come, pour me the wine in plain sight,
And do not care what may come.
And pay no heed to what may be.
إِنif كانَit be خَيرٌgood أَوor كانَit be شَرٌّevil
إِن كانَ خَيرٌ أَو كانَ شَرٌّ
إِنّاindeed we إِلىto اللَهِGod راجِعونare returning
إِنّا إِلى اللَهِ راجِعون
Whether it be good or evil,
Whether it be good or whether it be evil,
Indeed, to God we shall return.
Indeed, unto God we are returning.
