For whom does the fragrance waft?

For whom do the birds sing?

For whom are the bottles lined up?

For whom are the wines poured?

    And no graceful beauty,

    And no blooming youth,

    Rather, mummies clad

    In satins and silk.

    They began rattling around me,

So my mind nearly took flight.

And my heart sought refuge in my breast,

As though it were a sparrow

    That had glimpsed high above

    Sparrowhawks and falcons.

    And said, 'You are beset—flee!'

    I said, 'Escape is hard.'

I have no wing, nor have I

    A car or a camel.

Patience, for this is an affliction,

    Decreed and written down.

And I began to ask my Lord,

And He is the Gentle, the All-Aware:

Where are the beautiful young women,

    If this is the resurrection?

Would that those present were absent,

    And those absent were present!

    Rather, would that every fabric

    Were face veils and curtains!

For it has harmed and hurt

    My eyes, this unveiling.

    These ages long past

    Circle and wheel around me,

    In every gray-haired woman whose

    Youth and vanity have fled.

    مُقَطَّبٌ مَزرورُ

    As though her mouth

    Were puckered, buttoned shut;

    A pouch, containing nothing

    Of jewels, cinched shut.

As though it were a wound

    Over which months have passed.

    O seeker of honey, desist!

    Nothing remains but the hive.

    قَد عَضَّهُ الزَمهَريرُ

    As though her face

    Had been bitten by bitter cold;

Like the full moon when you see it

With a telescope to aid you:

To your eyes there appear upon it

    Isthmuses and seas,

    And uplands and hollows,

    Yet it is deserted.

    Like a whetstone, but

    No water swirls within it.

For a mosquito, it holds no

    Nourishment, only gnawing hunger.

    Nor can it be marked

    By fang or claw.

    And their hands tremble,

    And their bones creak.

As for the eyes, they have sunk

    And keep on sinking:

    Caverns—no, deserts,

    No, caves—no, graves.

    And the waist—pardon me, and

    Forgive me—they have waists!

    They are she-ghouls, but

    They cough so much.

    وَضِحكُهُنَّ حَريرُ

    Their speech is a shudder,

    And their laughter a rasp;

    And their gait is stumbling,

    And sometimes a measured tread.

They grow angry if a shadow leans,

    And if a blackbird sings,

    And if branches sway gently,

And if a fragrance steals by,

    And if grass sways,

    And if light ripples.

    For everything is ugly,

    And everything contemptible.

And how can a heart rejoice

    Whose hope is vanquished?

    ما لِلجَليدِ خَريرُ

    Ashes have no flame;

    Ice has no murmuring flow.

    وَالوَرد وَالمَنثورُ

    Around them are daisies,

    And roses and stock flowers;

    Yet they are downcast,

    As though they were rocks.

    They smile at nothing.

    Have they no mouths?

    Yes, they have mouths,

    But no feeling.

As though beauty on the earth

    Were all a sham.

    In a hotel, I am a guest

    Of Hell, herded in.

And am I there a guest

For an hour, or a prisoner?

Oh, would that I had never visited it,

And would that it were deserted!

For none finds ease in it

    Except one deaf and [blind].
