فيin سَماءٍa sky نَحنُwe فيهاin it أَنجُمُstars
A moon brought the sun to us,
The moon brought the sun to us
A moon has borne the sun towards us,
in a sky where we are stars.
In a sky where we are stars
In a firmament where we are the scattered stars.
شادِنٌa young gazelle حَكَّمَهُmade him ruler الحُسنُbeauty بِناover us

وَسِوىand other than الحُسنِbeauty بِناover us لاnot يَحكُمُrules
A young gazelle whom beauty made our ruler,
United by beauty that rules us
A fawn whom Beauty has appointed our judge,
and none but beauty rules us.
And nothing but beauty rules us
And naught but Beauty holds sway over us.
أَسبَلَlet fall الشِعرَthe hair فَياso, O عَينيmy eye اِسهَريstay awake

إِنَّهُit is indeed لَيلٌa night طَويلٌlong مُظلِمُdark
He let his hair fall—O my eye, stay awake:
My hair falls, oh my eyes stay awake
He let down his hair, so keep watch, O my eye,
it is a long, dark night.
It is a long dark night
For it is a night, long and profound in darkness.

And beware of it, my soul, for
And beware my inclination from it
And guard yourself, O my soul, against it,
that black hair is nothing but a speckled serpent.
That blackness is but dots
For that blackness is naught but a speckled serpent.
كادَalmost أَنto يُشبِهَresemble جِسميmy body خَصرَهُhis waist

إِنَّماonly رِقَّتُهُits slenderness بيin me سَقَمُsickness
My body almost came to resemble his waist,
His waist almost resembled my body
My body has well-nigh come to resemble his waist,
but in me, that slenderness is sickness.
Yet his slimness made me ill
Yet his is slender grace, while mine is infirmity.
يَتَلَظّىblazes الخالُthe beauty mark فيon وَجَنَتِهِhis cheek
أَرَأَيتُمhave you seen? كَيفَhow يُصلىis scorched المُغرَمُthe lover
The beauty mark blazes upon his cheek.
The mole hides in his cheek
The beauty spot blazes upon his cheek,
Have you seen how the lover is scorched?
Have you seen how the lovesick prays?
Have you seen how the lovestruck one is scorched?

An idol: fire is in his cheek, and in
An idol with fire in his cheek and
An idol: in his cheek is fire, and in
his palm her rival wife blazes.
In his palm its harm kindles
His palm, its fiery rival is all aflame.

كُلَّevery صَبٍّardent lover هامَfell in love فيهِwith him الكَرَمُgenerosity
A daughter of the vine, loved by none but
A daughter of generosity that nothing mattered in her except
A daughter of the vine, loved by none save
every ardent lover whom generosity adores.
Every love-struck one who loved generosity
Every ardent heart wherein nobility dwells.
حُبِسَتshe was imprisoned فيin دَنِّهاher wine jar مِنsince قَدَمٍolden times
ماnot لَهاshe has ذَنبٌa sin وَلَكِنand yet ظَلَمواthey acted unjustly
She has been imprisoned in her wine jar for ages;
She was imprisoned in her lowliness
Imprisoned in her cask since time of old,
she has no sin, yet they wronged her.
With no sin yet they wronged her
She bears no sin, yet they have done her wrong.
حَرَّموهاthey forbade her حينَماwhen خافواthey feared عَليfor

They forbade her when they feared
They forbade her when they feared for
They forbade her when they feared that others
others might claim her—so pour me what they forbade.
Themselves so give me what they forbade
Might claim her; so pour me what they forbade.

She is a secret spread among humankind,
It is a secret that spread amongst people
She is a secret divulged amongst mankind,
and once a secret spreads, it cannot be concealed.
And when the secret spreads it cannot be hidden
And when a secret spreads, it cannot be hidden.
