Beauty is around you, in the lowlands and on the heights.

So look: do you not see beauty as I do?

September walks in the fields and among the hills,

And in September the earth is loveliest to behold.

A month that spreads his art throughout nature:

Trees clapping, or radiance bursting forth.

For light is flowing magic, and water is poetry—

Limpid—and fragrance is the earth's breath.

Do not think the rivers are dancing water:

These are his songs transformed into rivers.

And look at the trees, stripping green

From themselves and donning red or yellow.

They grow bare and are clothed at the same time,

And art is in what they wear and in their nakedness.

It is as though a hidden fire were there,

Dissolving just as it is about to be sensed,

And melting into pigments like the hues of morning light,

And rippling as melodies and wafting as ambergris.

Images and phantoms appear, light and airy,

And they seem like images we see in sleep.

God be praised for September, that enchanting month:

He outstripped the months, though he came late.

Who can embroider or weave brocade like his,

Or who can paint as he has painted?

His fingers touched the sky, and its face

Is radiant; he passed over the soil, and it blossomed.

He restored majesty to life, and brought me back

From the land of New York to Umm al-Qura.
