If I could, I would pour my soul
If I could, I would pour my soul
as wine into her cup,
As wine into her cup,
حَتّىso that إِذاwhen حالَintervened النَوىseparation
بَينيbetween me وَبَينَand between كِناسِهاher lair
so that, when separation came
So that if separation intervened
between me and her lair,
Between me and her sanctuary,
وَتَجاهَلَتand she feigned ignorance أَوor أَنكَرَتshe denied
أَميmy mother (as written) لَدىin the presence of جُلّاسِهاher companions
and she feigned ignorance or denied
And she feigned ignorance or denied
my mother before her companions,
My presence among her company,
I prolonged; apparently intended as أطللتُ: 'I peered out' مِنfrom أَجفانِهاher eyelids
وَجَرَيتُand I flowed مَعwith أَنفاسِهاher breaths
I would peer out from her eyelids
I would look out from within her eyelids,
and flow with her breaths.
And flow along with her breaths.
