تِلكَthose السُنونُyears الغارِباتُsetting وَرائيbehind me
سِفرٌa book كَتَبتُI wrote حُروفَهُits letters بِدِمائيwith my blood
Those years that have set behind me
Those years that have set behind me / Are a book whose letters I wrote with my blood.
Are a book whose letters I wrote in my blood.
I did not live them merely to count them; rather, I lived / So that my own features might appear within theirs.
ماnot عِشتُهاI lived them لِأَعُدَّهاto count them بَلrather عِشتُهاI lived them
لِتَبينَso that it may appear فيin سيمائِهاtheir countenance سيمائيmy countenance
I did not live them to count them; rather, I lived them
Had I been content simply to count the days, / My life and the life of a silent rock would be the same.
So that my countenance might appear in theirs.
And a shore holding nothing but mute sands / Would have surpassed me on the day of boasting.
سِيّانَalike لَوif أَنّيthat I قَنِعتُwas content بِعَدِّهاwith counting them
عُمريmy lifetime وَعُمرُand the lifetime of الصَخرَةِthe rock الصَمّاءِdeaf
Had I been content to count them, the same would be
High ideals loomed within their horizons, / So I sought them as a path to glory.
My lifetime and the lifetime of the deaf rock.
With a love for goodness flowing through my veins, / And a care for weakness and the weak.
وَلَبَذَّنيand would outdo me يَومَthe day of التَفاخُرِboasting شاطِئٌa shore
ماnot فيهِin it غَيرُother than رِمالِهِits sands الخَرساءِmute
And on the day of boasting, a shore would outdo me,
And a devotion to truth wherever I found it, / And to beauty in living beings and inanimate things.
Containing nothing but its mute sands.
So that a tale might be told after I am gone of a poet / With whom the world danced on wings of light.
لاحَتappeared لِيَto me العَلياءُthe heights فيin آفاقِهاtheir horizons
فَأَرَدتُهاso I wanted them دَرباًa path إِلىto العَلياءِthe heights
The heights appeared to me on their horizons,
He scattered fragrances along the paths of his life, / And flowed like love through scents and morning dew.
So I wanted them to be a path to the heights,
He emerged from the miser's heart as generosity, / And as courage in times of peace and war.
وَمَحَبَّةًand love لِلخَيرِfor goodness تَسريflows فيin دَميmy blood
وَرِعايَةًand care لِلضَعفِfor weakness وَالضُعَفاءِand the weak
And a love of goodness flowing through my blood,
He walked toward the oppressed as a glimmer of mercy, / And struck against darkness as a whip of tribulation.
And care for weakness and the weak,
So the world that buried my ancestors honors me, / And the world that brings forth my descendants welcomes me with a smile.
وَعِبادَةًand worship لِلحَقِّof truth أَينَwherever وَجَدتُهُI found it
وَالحُسنِand beauty فيin الأَحياءِliving beings وَالأَشياءِand things
And worship of truth wherever I found it,
Those years, with their misery and their bliss, / Have bent my frame and drained my vitality.
And of beauty in living beings and things,
Where is the youth in which I wrapped my dreams? / Youth is no longer a cloak for me to wear.
لِتَدورَso it may circulate بَعديafter me قِصَّةٌa story عَنabout شاعِرٍa poet
رَقَصَتdanced بِهِwith him الدُنياthe world جَناحَa wing ضِياءِof light
So that after me a story might circulate about a poet
My soul feels as though its burdens, / Given a choice, have chosen to rest upon my limbs.
With whom the world danced, a wing of light,
How many visions have risen along its flanks, / Like a caravan of lights and fragrances.
نَشَرَspread الطُيوبَfragrances عَلىupon دُروبِthe paths of حَياتِهِhis life
وَسَرىand flowed هَوىًas love فيin الطيبِfragrance وَالأَنداءِand dew
Who spread fragrances along the paths of his life,
After a struggle, I turned my gaze upon them, / Only for my eyes to stumble upon scattered remains.
And flowed as love through fragrance and dew,
Oh, the victims! No eyelid blinks at their death, / Nor are they counted among the martyrs.
وَأَطَلَّand emerged مِنfrom قَلبِthe heart of البَخيلِthe miser سَماحَةًas generosity
وَشَجاعَةًand courage فيin السِلمِpeace وَالهَيجاءِand battle
And emerged from the miser's heart as generosity,
I have bid farewell to the pleasures of fantasy and cast them aside, / Content to suffer along with the wise.
And as courage in peace and battle,
So I realized, like them, that I am the author of my misery, / And that I am the creator of my own bliss.
وَمَشىand walked إِلىtoward المَظلومِthe oppressed بارِقُa flash رَحمَةٍof mercy
وَهَوىand fell عَلىupon الظَلامِdarkness سَوطَa scourge بَلاءِof affliction
And walked to the oppressed, a flash of mercy,
After all I have endured, I see myself / Like a ship emerging from the storm.
And fell upon darkness as a scourge of affliction.
And like a traveler reaching the city / After losing the path and wandering the desert.
فَتُعِزُّso honors دُنياa world قَدalready طَوَتenfolded آبائيmy fathers
وَتَهِشُّand smiles gladly دُنياa world أَطلَعَتbrought forth أَبنائيmy sons
So a world that has enfolded my fathers may honor me,
Thanks be to my friends, for without their love, / I would never have drawn near to the world of radiance.
And a world that has brought forth my sons may smile.
With them, I steered my ship through the gales, / And with them, I planted my banner upon the stars.
تِلكَthose السُنونُyears بِبُؤسِهاwith their misery وَنَعيمِهاand their bliss
مالَتbent بِعوديwith my stem وَاِنطَوَتand folded away بِرِوائيwith my freshness
Those years, with their misery and their bliss,
Thanks be to my enemies, for without their mischief, / I would not have known they were merely rabble.
Bent my stem and folded away my freshness.
Sorrow gnawed at their hearts when I laughed; / For the wedding feast of love is the funeral of hate.
أَينَwhere الشَبابُyouth أَلُفُّI wrap أَحلاميmy dreams بِهِin it
لَيسَis not الشَبابُyouth الآنَnow ليfor me بِرِداءِa cloak
Where is youth, in which I wrap my dreams?
My sin against the envious is that I surpassed them, / And left them stumbling in my wake.
Youth is no longer a cloak for me.
And my greatest offense to them is that they sat idle / Upon the dust, while I did not.
نَفسيmy soul تَحُسُّfeels كَأَنَّماas though أَثقالُهاits burdens
قَدalready خُيِّرَتwere given a choice فَتَخَيَّرَتso chose أَعضائيmy limbs
My soul feels as though its burdens
The forgiveness granted by chivalry and manhood is simply this: / I erred when I considered them my peers.
Were given a choice and chose my limbs.
Thanks to every soul with whom I mingled my own, / Making his loyalty and mine sweet and pure.
كَمhow many مِنof رُؤىًvisions طَلَعَتrose عَلىupon جَنَباتِهاits flanks
رَكباًa caravan مِنَof الأَضواءِlights وَالأَشذاءِand scents
How many visions rose upon its flanks,
Let him who will dream of the heavens; as for me, / I have found my heaven within the human heart.
A caravan of lights and scents!
Beauty is not beauty in and of itself; / Beauty exists only when there is one to behold it.
قَلَّبتُI turned فيهاwithin it بَعدَafter لَأيٍtoil ناظِريmy gaze
فَتَعَثَّرَتso stumbled عَينايَmy two eyes بِالأَشلاءِover dismembered remains
After much effort, I turned my gaze within it,
What is the universe and all it holds, without Adam, / But dust suspended within dust?
And my eyes stumbled over dismembered remains.
And the father of mankind did not manifest his existence / Or complete his purpose without Eve.
ياO لِلضَحاياfor the victims لاnot يَرِفُّflutters لِمَوتِهاat their death
جَفنٌan eyelid وَلاand not تُحصىare counted مَعَamong الشُهَداءِthe martyrs
Alas for the victims, at whose death no
When I poured the wine, I poured it / For people, not for the radiant stars.
Eyelid flutters, nor are they counted among the martyrs.
The stars do not drink the wine, / Even if it is pressed from the very souls of poets.
وَدَّعتُI bade farewell to لَذّاتِthe pleasures of الخَيالِimagination وَعُفتُهاand shunned them
وَرَضيتُand was content أَنto أَشقىsuffer مَعَwith الحُكَماءِthe wise
I bade farewell to fancy's delights and shunned them,
Those years, the barren and the fertile alike, / Are sweet to me; such is the will of my loyalty.
And was content to suffer alongside the wise.
For the harsh night of my life / Is, in the span of time, equal to the gentle night.
فَعَرَفتُso I learned مِثلَهُمُlike them بِأَنّيthat I موجِدٌa maker
بُؤسيmy misery وَأَنّيand that I خالِقٌa creator نُعَماءِbliss
So I learned, like them, that I am the maker of
O you who say I have wronged myself, hold your tongue; / Leave me be, for you do not bear my burdens.
My misery, and that I am the creator of bliss.
Life gives the Spirit as part of its bounty, / And I, the fruit of that Spirit, give my all.
إِنّيindeed I أُرانيI see myself بَعدَafter ماwhat كابَدتُهُI endured it

I see myself, after what I have endured,
What is a lifetime but a vessel? And I / Have filled my vessel with what is precious and pure.
Like a ship emerging from the storms,
If I remain, my remaining is for beauty, / And if I perish, I perish within beauty.
وَكَسائِحٍand like a traveler بَلَغَreached المَدينَةَthe city بَعدَماafter

And like a traveler who reached the city after
By God, how sweet and radiant is my night! / In the book of life, it is the royal seal.
Losing the way and wandering in the desert.
O friends, I shall never forget your beautiful deeds / Until my soul departs from my body.

Thanks to my friends: were it not for their love,
And my eye says, "I have lost my light," / And my heart says, "I have lost my hope."
I would not have drawn near the world of radiance.

Through them I plunged into the storms in my vessel,
And through them I fastened my banner upon the stars.

Thanks to my enemies: were it not for their havoc,
I would not have known they were of the rabble.

When I laughed, sorrow gnawed at their hearts;
Love's wedding is hatred's funeral.

My offense in the eyes of the envious is that I outstripped them,
And left them stumbling behind me.

Sat down, while I did not sit upon the dusty earth.

Let nobility and manhood pardon me, for I
Erred when I counted them my peers.

My soul, so his loyalty and mine grew sweet.

Whoever dreams of heaven—as for me,
I found my heaven in a human heart.

Beauty is not beauty in and of itself;
Beauty exists when a beholder exists.

Are but dust suspended in dust.

Or fulfilled his purpose but Eve.

For people, not for the radiant stars.

The stars do not drink wine, even if it is
Pressed from the souls of poets.

Those years—their barren ones and their fruitful ones alike—
Are sweet to me; so my fidelity decrees.

For the harsh night in my life
And in the life of time is like the gracious night.

O you who say, 'You wronged yourself,' be not hasty;
Leave me be: you are not carrying my burdens.

And the fruits of the soul are all I give.

Filled my vessel with precious perfume.

It is like an ornate monogram in the book of life.
