دِارُabode السَلامِpeace وَأَرضُand land الهَناbliss
يَشُقُّis painful عَلىfor الُلِّeveryone (unclear spelling) أَنthat تَحزَناyou grieve
Abode of peace and land of bliss,
The land of peace and the country of bliss
Abode of Peace and land of bliss,
It pains everyone that you should grieve.
It is hard for God that we grieve
It weighs upon all that you should grieve.
فَخَطبُfor the calamity of فِلِسطينَPalestine خَطبُthe calamity of العُلىglory
وَماand not كانَwas رِزءُthe loss of العُلىglory هَيِّناslight
For Palestine's calamity is the calamity of glory,
So the cause of Palestine is a supreme cause
The affliction of Palestine is the affliction of the high,
And glory's loss has never been slight.
And the provision of the Supreme was not easy
And the calamity of the noble was never slight.
سَهِرناwe kept vigil لَهُfor it فَكَأَنَّso it is as though السُيوفَthe swords
تَحُزُّcut بِأَكبادِناinto our livers هَهُناhere
We kept vigil for it, as though swords
We stayed up night for it as if swords
We kept vigil for it, as though swords
Were cutting into our livers here.
Were slicing through our livers here
Were slicing through our vitals right here.

And how can sleep visit eyes
And how can the planets please eyes
How can slumber visit eyes
That see death's eyes all around them?
That see around it eyes of misfortune?
That see the eyes of death staring all around?

And how can life be sweet for a people
And how can life be pleasant for people
How can life be sweet for a people
For whom the paths to hope are barred?
Whose paths to wishes are blocked?
Against whom the paths of hope are barred?
بِلادَهُمtheir country عُرضَةًexposed لِلضَياعِto ruin
وَأُمَّتُهُمand their nation عُرضَةًexposed لِلفَناto extinction
Their country exposed to ruin,
Their country exposed to loss
Their lands are exposed to loss,
And their nation exposed to extinction.
And their nation exposed to oblivion
And their nation exposed to annihilation.
يُريدُwishes اليَهودُthe Jews بِأَنthat يَصلُبوهاthey crucify her
وَتَأبىand refuses فِلِسطينُPalestine أَنto تَذعُناsubmit
The Jews wish to crucify her,
The Jews want to crucify it
The Jews desire to crucify her,
And Palestine refuses to submit.
Yet Palestine refuses to surrender
But Palestine refuses to submit.
وَتَأبىand refuses المُروأَةُchivalry فيin أَهلِهاher people
وَتَأبىand refuse السُيوفُthe swords وَتَأبىand refuse القناthe spears
And the chivalry of her people refuses,
The woman refuses among her folk
The honor within her people refuses,
And swords refuse, and spears refuse.
The swords refuse and the spears refuse
As do the swords and the spears.
أَأَرضُshall the land of...? الخَيالِimagination وَآياتِهِand its wonders
وَذاتُand endowed with الجَلالِmajesty وَذاتُand endowed with السَناradiance
Shall the land of imagination and its wonders,
The land of imagination and its signs
O land of imagination and its miracles,
Endowed with majesty and radiance,
And the owner of majesty and glory
Possessor of majesty and possessor of light.
تَصيرُbecome لِغَوغائِهِمfor their rabble مَسرَحاًa stage
وَتَغدوand become لِشُذّاهِمfor their outcasts مَكمَناa hiding place
Become a stage for their rabble,
Does it become for their riffraff a theater
Do you become a stage for their mobs,
And become a hiding place for their outcasts?
And get for their rabble an ambush?
And turn into a hideout for their outcasts?
بِنَفسِيَwith my life أُردُنِّهاher Jordan السَلسَبيلُsweet-flowing
وَمَنand those who جاوَرواlived beside ذَلِكَthat الأُردُناJordan
My life for her sweet-flowing Jordan,
By my soul, its Jordan and those who dwelt
My soul be ransomed for her fresh Jordan waters,
And for those who dwelt beside that Jordan.
That Jordan yesterday defended the sanctuary
And for those who neighbor that Jordan.
لَقَدindeed دافَعواthey defended أَمسِyesterday دونَin defense of الحِمىthe homeland
فَكانَتso became حُروبُهُمُtheir wars هَربَناour flight (as written)
Indeed, they defended the homeland yesterday,
So their wars were a fleeing refuge
They defended the sanctuary yesterday,
So their wars became our flight.
And they gave all they had
And their wars were truly our wars.
وَجادواand they gave generously بِكُلِّwith all الَّذيthat which عِندَهُمthey had
وَنَحنُand we سَنَبذُلُshall give ماwhat عِندَناwe have
And they gave generously all they had,
And we will give all we have
They gave generously of all they possessed,
And we shall give what we have.
So say to the Jews and their dispersal
And we shall sacrifice what we possess.
فَقُلso say لِليَهودِto the Jews وَأَشيَعَهُمand their partisans
لَقَدindeed خَدَعَتكُمdeceived you بُروقُlightning flashes السَناradiance
So tell the Jews and their partisans:
Verily the flares of glory have fooled you
So say to the Jews and their partisans:
Indeed, flashes of radiance have deceived you.
If only Balfour gave you a country that is not ours
The flashes of false lightning have deceived you.
أَلاah لَيتَif only بِلفورَBalfour أَعطاكُمhad given you
بِلاداًa land لَهُbelonging to him لاnot بِلاداًa land لَناbelonging to us
Ah, if only Balfour had given you
We are more spacious than our Jerusalem
Would that Balfour had given you
A land of his, not a land of ours.
And you are more beloved to London
A land of his own, not a land of ours.
فَلُندُنُfor London أَرحَبُmore spacious مِنthan قُدسِناour Jerusalem
وَأَنتُمand you أَحَبُّdearer إِلىto لُندُناLondon
For London is more spacious than our Jerusalem,
And gave you a homeland in the stars
For London is more spacious than our Jerusalem,
And you are dearer to London.
No Arab wishes those abodes
And you are more beloved to London.
وَمَنّاكُمُand had promised you وَطَناًa homeland فيin النُجومِthe stars
فَلاfor no عَرَبِيَّArab بِتِلكَin those الدُنىworlds
And had promised you a homeland among the stars,
Does your nation rob them of their rationality
He tantalized you with a homeland in the stars,
For there is no Arab in those worlds.
And calls them benevolent?
For there is no Arab in those worlds.
أَيَسلُبُdoes he rob...? قَومَكُمyour people رُشدَهُمtheir good sense
وَيَدعوهُand call him قَومِكُمyour people مُحسِناa benefactor
Does he rob your people of their good sense,
And delivers the innocent to death
Does he rob your people of their reason,
While your people call him a benefactor,
And a group counts it as religious?
That your people call him a benefactor?
وَيَدفَعُand drives لِلمَوتِto death بِالأَبرِياءِwith the innocent
وَيَحسَبُهُand considers him مَعشَرٌa group دَيِّناdevout
And drive the innocent to death,
And wonder at you, charging
He pushes the innocent toward death,
While a group deems him devout?
The Arabs with inability and stupidity
Yet a faction considers him righteous?
وَياand oh عَجَباًastonishment لَكُمat you توغِرونَyou inflame
عَلىagainst العَرَبِthe Arabs التامِزَthe Thames وَالهَدسَناand the Hudson
And how astonishing that you inflame
Insulting them with ugly speech
How strange of you to incite against the Arabs
The Thames and the Hudson against the Arabs!
When they deserved friendly praise
The Thames and the Hudson.
تَرمونَهُمyou pelt them بِقَبيحِwith foul الكَلامِwords
وَكانواand they were أَحَقَّmore deserving بِضافيof abundant الثَناpraise
You pelt them with foul words,
And all their sins are that they
You cast ugly words upon them,
Though they were more deserving of lavish praise.
Say "Do not violate our home"
When they were more deserving of abundant praise.
وَكُلُّand all خَطيآتِهِمtheir sins أَنَّهُمthat they
يَقولونَthey say لاdo not تُسرِفواsquander بَيتَناour home
And all their sins are that they
For Palestine is not common land
And all their sins are that they say:
Say, 'Do not squander our home.'
To be given to whoever wants to reside
Do not violate our home.
فَلَيسَتfor is not فِلِسطينُPalestine أَرضاًland مَشاعاًheld in common
فَتُعطىso it is given لِمَنto whoever شاءَwishes أَنto يَسكُناsettle
For Palestine is not land held in common,
So if you want it with the flames of spears
For Palestine is not a common pasture,
To be given to whoever wishes to settle there.
We will repel you with the lengths of spears
To be given to whoever wishes to settle.
فَإِنso if تَطلُبوهاyou seek her بِسُمرِwith dusky القَناspears
نَرُدُّكُمwe repel you بِطِوالِwith long القَناspears
So if you seek her with dusky spears,
For in the Arab are human traits
If you seek her with tawny spears,
We shall repel you with long spears.
Other than fear and cowardice
We will repel you with long lances.
فَفيfor in العَرَبِيِّthe Arab صِفاتُqualities الأَنامِmankind
سِوىexcept أَنthat يَخافَhe fears وَأَنand that يَجبُناhe is cowardly
For in the Arab are the qualities of mankind,
And if you mix deceit between us
For in the Arab are the traits of all mankind,
Except fear and cowardice.
You will not deceive a believing man
Except for fear and cowardice.
وَإِنand if تَحجُلواyou prance بَينَناamong us بِالخِداعِwith deceit
فَلَنthen will not تَخدَعواyou deceive رَجُلاًa man مُؤمِناbelieving
And if you prance among us with deceit,
And if you boycott it, that is better
Though you dance among us with deceit,
You will never deceive a man of faith.
For Palestine is a possession of ours
You will not deceive a man of faith.
وَإِنand if تَهجُروهاyou abandon her فَذَلِكَthen that أَولىpreferable
فَإِنَّfor indeed فِلِسطينَPalestine مُلكٌa possession لَناbelonging to us
And if you abandon her, that is better,
It was for our ancestors before us
If you leave her, that is more fitting,
For Palestine belongs to us.
And remains for our descendants after us
For Palestine is a possession of ours.
وَكانَتand she was لِأَجدادِناbelonging to our forefathers قَبلَناbefore us
وَتَبقىand remains لِأَحفادِناfor our grandchildren بَعدَناafter us
And she belonged to our forefathers before us,
You have without it riches
It belonged to our ancestors before us,
And shall remain our grandchildren's after us.
While we have without it no riches
And shall remain for our grandchildren after us.
وَإِنَّand indeed لَكُمfor you بِسِواهاelsewhere غِنىًsufficiency
وَلَيسَand there is not لَناfor us بِسِواهاelsewhere غِنىsufficiency
And you can find what you need elsewhere,
So do not account it as a homeland for you
You have sufficiency elsewhere,
But we cannot find what we need elsewhere.
For it was never a homeland for you
But we have no sufficiency but her.
فَلاso do not تَحسَبوهاreckon her لَكُمfor you مَوطِناًa homeland
فَلَمfor not تَكُshe was يَوماًever لَكُمfor you مَوطِناa homeland
So do not reckon her your homeland,
What we want is not impossible
So do not reckon it a homeland for you,
For she was never your homeland.
And what you attempted is not possible
For never one day was it a homeland for you.
وَلَيسَand is not الَّذيthat which نَبتَغيهِwe seek it مُحالاًimpossible
وَلَيسَand is not الَّذيthat which رُمتُمُyou sought مُمكِناpossible
And what we seek is not impossible,
We advised you, so be rational and renounce
What we seek is not impossible,
And what you sought is not possible.
Balfour, that pimp of yours
And what you desired is not possible.
نَصَحناكُمُwe advised you فاِرعَوُّاso desist وَاِنبُذواand cast aside
بَليفورَBalfour ذَيّالِكَthat fellow الأَرعَناreckless
We have counseled you: desist, and cast aside
Or else I advise you
We advised you, so desist and cast away
Balfour, that reckless fool.
To carry shrouds with you
That foolish man, Balfour.
وَإِمّاand if أَبَيتُمyou refuse فَأوصيكُمُthen I advise you
بِأَنto تَحمُلوyou carry مَعكُمُwith you الأَكفُناshrouds
And if you refuse, then I advise you
For we will make of its land
But if you refuse, then I advise you
To carry shrouds with you,
A homeland for us and a grave for you
To carry your shrouds with you.
فَإِنّاfor we سَنَجعَلُshall make مِنof أَرضِهاher soil
لَناfor us وَطَناًa homeland وَلَكَمand for you مَدفَناa burial ground
For we shall make of her soil
For we shall make of its earth
A homeland for us and a burial ground for you.
A homeland for us, and a graveyard for you.
