إِذاif جَدَّفتَyou blaspheme جوزيتَyou are punished عَلىfor التَجديفِblasphemy بِالنارِwith fire
وَإِنand if أَحبَبتَyou love عُيِّرتَyou are shamed مِنَby الجارَةthe female neighbor وَالجارِand the male neighbor
If you blaspheme, you are punished for blasphemy with fire.
If you blaspheme, you are repaid for your blasphemy with Fire,
And if you love, you are shamed by the woman next door and the man next door.
And if you love, you are shamed by neighbors, women and men alike,
وَإِنand if قامَرتَyou gamble أَوor راهَنتَyou wager فيin الناديthe club أَوِor الدارِthe house
فَأَنتَthen you are الرَجُلُthe man الآثِمُsinful عِندَin the eyes of الناسpeople وَالباريand the Creator
And if you gamble or wager in the club or the house,
And if you gamble or wager in the club or at home,
Then you are a sinful man in the eyes of people and the Creator.
Then you are a sinful man before the people and the Creator,
وَإِنand if تَسكَرyou get drunk لِكَيso that تَنسىyou forget هُموماًcares ذاتِbearing أَوقارِheavy burdens
خَسِرتَyou lost الدينfaith وَالدُنياand worldly life وَلَمand did not تَربَحyou gain سِوىanything but العارِdisgrace
And if you get drunk to forget cares laden with burdens,
And if you get drunk to forget cares that bear down heavily,
You lose faith and worldly life, and gain nothing but disgrace.
You have lost religion and the world, gaining nothing but shame,
وَإِنand if قُلتَyou say إِذَنthen فَالعَيشُthen life أَوزارٌburdens بِأَوزارِupon burdens
وَإِنَّand indeed المَوتَdeath أَشهىmore desirable ليto me إِذاif لَمnot أَقضِI fulfill أَوطاريmy desires
And if you say, 'Then life is burden upon burden,
And if you say, "Life, then, is merely sin upon sin,
and death is indeed sweeter to me if I do not fulfill my desires,'
And death is more desirable to me if I do not satisfy my wants,"
وَأَسرَعتَand you hasten إِلىto السَيفِthe sword أَوِor السُمِّpoison أَوِor النارِfire
لِكَيso that تَخرُجَyou leave مِنَfrom دُنياa world ذَوُهاits people غَيرُnot أَحرارِfree
and hasten to the sword or poison or fire,
And you rush toward the sword, or poison, or fire,
to leave a world whose people are not free,
To exit a world whose inhabitants are not free,
فَهَذاthen this المُنكَرُthe abomination الأَعظَمُthe greatest فيin سِرsecrecy وَإِضمارِand concealment
إِذَنthen فَاِحيso live وَمُتand die كَالناسِlike other people عَبداًas a slave غَيرَnot مُختارِfree to choose
Then this is the greatest abomination, in secrecy and concealment.
Then this is the greatest evil, whether hidden or conceived;
Then live and die like other people, a slave with no choice.
So live and die like all mankind: a servant with no choice.
