A vision in sleep—many a dream in slumber

Within it, the truths of things come to light.

Indeed, I dreamed that I seemed to be walking

    In an enchanting, luxuriant garden.

Light was spread upon its paths,

And fragrance was in the breezes and the shade.

And its grass was rippling silk,

And the air was light upon light.

And suddenly, a sound like growling rang in

My ear, and fangs gnashed behind me.

So I turned my gaze, searching, astonished

At what I had heard, though I was not in a desert.

And there behind me in the garden was a barking dog,

    Fierce-eyed and hollow-bellied.

His veins nearly protruded from his skin,

And with them appeared a craving for my blood.

I feared his fang would catch in my cloak,

So I kicked him in anger, and my shoe flew off.

Then he closed his molars upon it, as though

His molars had bitten into the phoenix.

And he went with it to his companions, who beamed with joy,

And they shared it out; it was the finest supper.

Let no one who has seen me barefoot be astonished:

My sandals have worn out the tongues of fools.
