حَولَها في الماءِ أَظلالَ النُجوم
The frog cried out when she saw
The frogs croaked when they saw
The frog cried out when she beheld
The stars' shadows in the water around her:
Reflections of stars in the water around them
Around her in the water, the shadows of the stars.
ياO رِفاقيmy comrades ياO جُنوديmy soldiers اِحتَشِدواmuster
يا رِفاقي يا جُنودي اِحتَشِدوا
عَبَرَcrossed الأَعداءُthe enemies فيin اللَيلِthe night التُخومthe borders
عَبَرَ الأَعداءُ في اللَيلِ التُخوم
“O my comrades, O my soldiers, muster!
"O my friends, o my soldiers, gather
"O my comrades, O my soldiers, rally together!
The enemies have crossed the borders in the night.
The enemies have crossed our borders in the night"
The enemies have crossed the frontiers in the night.
فَاِطرُدوهُمso drive them out وَاِطرُدواand drive out اللَيلَthe night مَعاًtogether
فَاِطرُدوهُم وَاِطرُدوا اللَيلَ مَعاً
إِنَّهُindeed it مِثلَهُمُlike them باغٍan aggressor أَثيمsinful
إِنَّهُ مِثلَهُمُ باغٍ أَثيم
So drive them out, and drive the night out with them;
"Repel them and banish the night as well
Drive them out, and drive away the night as well,
It is, like them, a sinful aggressor.”
For it is like them, a vicious despoiler"

زَعقَةٌa cry سارَtraveled صَداهاits echo فيin الدُجىthe darkness
زَعقَةٌ سارَ صَداها في الدُجى
فَإِذاand suddenly الشَطُّthe shore شُخوصٌfigures وَحُسومand bodies (likely intended: وَجُسوم)
فَإِذا الشَطُّ شُخوصٌ وَحُسوم
A cry—its echo traveled through the darkness—
A shriek echoed in the darkness
A shrill cry whose echo traveled through the darkness,
And suddenly, figures and bodies filled the shore.
And the riverbank bushes and thorns shook
Until the bank became a mass of figures and swords.
فيon أَديمِskin الماءِthe water مِنfrom أَصواتِهاtheir voices
في أَديمِ الماءِ مِن أَصواتِها
رَعدَةُa shudder الحُمّىfever وَفيand in اللَيلِthe night وُجومsullen silence
رَعدَةُ الحُمّى وَفي اللَيلِ وُجوم
On the water's skin, from their voices,
In the water's surface, from their voices
Upon the surface of the water, rising from their voices,
A fever's shudder; and in the night, sullen silence.
Were thunderous fever and gloom in the night
Was the trembling of fever, while the night stood in gloom.
مَزَّقَtore apart الفَجرُdawn جَلابيبَcloaks الدُجىthe darkness
مَزَّقَ الفَجرُ جَلابيبَ الدُجى
وَمَحاand erased مِنfrom صَفحَةِthe page of الأَرضِthe earth الرُسومthe traces
وَمَحا مِن صَفحَةِ الأَرضِ الرُسوم
Dawn tore apart the cloaks of darkness
Dawn tore the veils of darkness
Dawn tore apart the cloaks of darkness,
And wiped the traces from the earth's page.
And erased the symbols from the face of the earth
And wiped the traces from the face of the earth.
فَمَشَتso she walked فيamong سِربِهاher flock مُختالَةًswaggering
فَمَشَت في سِربِها مُختالَةً
كَمَليكٍlike a king ظافِرٍvictorious بَينَamong قُرومchieftains
كَمَليكٍ ظافِرٍ بَينَ قُروم
So she walked among her flock, swaggering,
Then she walked among her troop proudly
So she walked among her swarm, strutting with vanity,
Like a victorious king among chieftains.
Like a victorious king among his warriors
Like a victorious king among mighty chiefs.
ثُمَّthen قالَتshe said لَكُمُfor you البُشرىglad tidings وَليand for me
ثُمَّ قالَت لَكُمُ البُشرى وَلي
قَدindeed نَجَوناwe escaped الآنَnow مِنfrom كَيدٍa plot عَظيمgreat
قَد نَجَونا الآنَ مِن كَيدٍ عَظيم
Then she said, “Glad tidings for you and me!
Then she said, "I bring you good news
Then she said: "Good tidings to you and to me,
We have now escaped a mighty plot.
We are now safe from a monumental scheme
We have now escaped a great and treacherous plot.
نَحنُwe لَوif لَمnot نَقهُرِwe vanquished الشُهبَthe shooting stars الَّتيthat
نَحنُ لَو لَم نَقهُرِ الشُهبَ الَّتي
هاجَمَتناattacked us لِأَذاقَتناthey would have made us taste الحُتومinevitable death
هاجَمَتنا لِأَذاقَتنا الحُتوم
Had we not vanquished the shooting stars that
If we did not defeat the meteors
For had we not vanquished the shooting stars that
Attacked us, they would have made us taste doom,
That attacked us, they would have made us taste annihilation
Attacked us, they would have made us taste our doom,
وَأَقامَتand would have dwelt بَعدَناafter us مِنfrom أَرضِناour land
وَأَقامَت بَعدَنا مِن أَرضِنا
فيin نَعيمٍbliss لَمnot تَجِدهُthey had found it فيin الغُيومthe clouds
في نَعيمٍ لَم تَجِدهُ في الغُيوم
And after us would have lived on our land
And they would have stayed, after us, in our land
And they would have dwelt in our land after us,
In bliss they had never found among the clouds.
Enjoying pleasures they never found in the clouds
In a bliss they never found within the clouds.
أَيُّهاO التاريخُHistory سَجِّلrecord أَنَّناthat we
أَيُّها التاريخُ سَجِّل أَنَّنا
أُمَّةٌa nation قَدindeed غَلَبَتhas defeated حَتّىeven النُجومthe stars
أُمَّةٌ قَد غَلَبَت حَتّى النُجوم
O History, record that we
O history, record that we
O History! Record that we
Are a nation that has defeated even the stars!”
Are a nation that overpowered even the stars
Are a nation that has conquered even the stars."
