نَفَّسَrelieves عَنfrom قَلبِكَyour heart الكُروباthe sorrows
A garden—if you visit it sorrowful,
A garden, when you visit it melancholic
A garden that, should you visit it in sorrow,
It lifts the sorrows from your heart.
It breathes from your heart the sorrows away
Relieves the heavy burdens from your heart.
يُعيدُrenders قَلبَthe heart الخَلِيِّthe carefree one مُغراًenamored
وَيُنسِيَand makes forget العاشِقُthe lover الحَبيباthe beloved
It makes the carefree heart enamored,
It returns the hermit's heart exuberant
It turns the carefree heart into one brimming with love,
And makes the lover forget the beloved.
And the lover forgets the beloved
And makes the lover forget their very beloved.

When the clouds weep over it, its flowers rend
When the clouds cry over it, it breaks
When the clouds weep over it,
Their collars in sorrow.
From grief its flowers in pockets
Its flowers tear their collars in grief.
تَلقىyou find لَدَيهِwith it الصَفاserenity ضُروباًin many forms
وَلَستَand you do not تَلقىfind لَهُfor it ضَريباan equal
There you find serenity in many forms,
It encounters serenity in varieties
You find within it pure delights of every kind,
Yet you find nothing to equal it.
And you will not encounter any harm in it
Yet you will never find a match for it.

Dewdrops embroidered it, and so
The dew drops rained over it and so
The dew drops have embroidered it,
Its mantle became patterned and fresh.
Its robes became old and withered
Making its garment patterned and exquisitely new.
فَمِنso, of غُصونٍbranches تَميسُsway تيهاًproudly

So there are branches swaying in pride,
Of branches it gently sways
Here are branches swaying with proud elegance,
And flowers wafting fragrance,
And of flowers it exudes fragrance
And flowers diffusing their fragrant perfume,
وَمِنand of طُيورٍbirds إِذاwhen تَغَنَّتthey sing

And birds that, when they sing,
Of birds, when they sing
And birds that, when they sing,
Bring the tormented one back to joy.
Meaning returns with them cheerful
Restore the weary soul to rapture.

وَلَيسَand there is not ماanything that يَقتَضيrequires رَقيباa watchman
And narcissus gazing like a watchman,
A narcissus like a guardian it bends
And the narcissus gazes like a jealous watcher,
Though nothing calls for a watchman.
And it has nothing that requires a guardian
Though nothing here warrants a spy.
وَأُقحُوانٍand chrysanthemums يُريكَshows you دُرّاًpearls

And chrysanthemums showing you pearls,
Pansies that show you pearls
And daisies that reveal pearls to your sight,
And pomegranate blossoms resembling flame.
And tulips that tell of flames
And pomegranate blossoms resembling flames.
وَجَدوَلٍand a stream لاnot يَزالُceases يَجريflows
كَأَنَّهُas though it يَقتَفيtracks مُريباa suspect
And a stream that never stops flowing,
A stream that continuously flows
And a stream that runs unceasingly,
As though it were tracking a suspect.
As if it chases playfully
As though chasing someone suspicious.
تَسمَعُyou hear طَوراًat times لَهُfrom it خَريراًa murmur
وَتارَةًand at other times فيin الزَرىunclear; likely the soil دَبيباa soft creeping
At times you hear its murmuring,
You hear sometimes its babble
At times you hear it murmuring loud,
And at others, a soft creeping through the soil.
And sometimes in the farm its creeping
And at others, a soft creeping over the hills.
إِذاwhen تَرامىspreads عَلىover جَديبٍbarren land
أَمسىbecame بِهِthrough it مَربَعاًa meadow خَصيباfertile
When it spreads over barren ground,
When it flows over a barren valley
If it casts itself upon barren soil,
Through it, that ground becomes a fertile meadow.
It makes it a fertile square
It turns it into a fertile meadow.
أَوor يَتَجنّىacts unjustly عَلىagainst خَصيبٍfertile land
أَعادَهُrenders it قاحِلاًparched جَديباbarren
Or, if it wrongs fertile ground,
Or when it winds over a fertile land
Or should it turn against a lush garden,
It makes it parched and barren.
It returns it barren and desolate
It renders it arid and barren again.

It is wholesome; were an ailing person to come to it,
It is true, so if a sick person visits it
It is so wholesome that were an invalid to visit,
They would visit no physician afterward.
He would not need a doctor thereafter
They would seek no doctor thereafter.
وَكُلُّand every مَعنىmeaning بِهِin it جَميلٌbeautiful

يُعَلِّمُteaches الشاعِرَthe poet النَسيباlove verse
And every meaning within it is beautiful,
And every meaning in it is beautiful
Every aspect within it is beautiful,
Teaching the poet love verse.
It teaches the poet a refined composition
Teaching the poet the art of amorous verse.
أَرضٌa land إِذاwhen زارَهاvisits it غَريبٌa stranger
أَصبَحَbecomes عَنfrom أَرضِهِhis land غَريباestranged
A land—when a stranger visits it,
A land, if a stranger visits it
A land that, if a stranger visits,
He becomes estranged from his own land.
He becomes a stranger to his own land
He becomes a stranger to his own homeland.
