فيin الحَيِّthe neighborhood يَبتَعيثُrouses الأَسىgrief وَيُثيرُand stirs
One evening she heard the wailing of the mourning women,
I heard the wailing of mourners one evening,
She heard the wailing of mourners at dusk, / In the neighborhood, stirring up sorrow and provoking grief.
In the neighborhood, rousing grief and stirring it.
Stirring sorrow in the neighborhood,
Weeping in the cover of darkness for a young girl; / Truly, weeping over lost youth is bitter.
يَبكَينَthey weep فيin جُنحِthe cover of الظَلامِdarkness صَبِيَّةًa young girl
إِنَّindeed البُكاءَweeping عَلىover الشَبابِthe young مَريرُbitter
They weep for a young girl under cover of darkness;
Girls crying in the wings of darkness,
Her face grew grim, and she turned in terror, / Like a gazelle certain it has been snared.
Indeed, mourning the young is bitter.
For weeping over youth is bitter.
A tear hesitated within her eyes, / A mute tear—neither flowing down nor receding.
فَتَجَهَّمَتso she frowned وَتَلَفَّتَتand looked around مُرتاعَةًalarmed
كَالظَبيِlike the gazelle أَيقَنَwas certain أَنَّهُthat it was مَأسورُcaptive
So she frowned and glanced about in terror,
She frowned and tossed confused,
As if it were a warrior surrounded by foes / With their swords, while his own blade lies broken.
Like a gazelle certain it was captive.
Like a gazelle certain it is captive,
She fell into gloom, and so all things grew gloomy: / The light, the shadows, and the deep dark.
وَتَحَيَّرَتand wavered فيin مُقلَتَيهاher two eyes دَمعَةٌa tear
خَرساءُmute لاdoes not تَهميstream وَلَيسَand does not تَغورُsink away
And a tear wavered in her eyes,
And a mute tear wavered in her eyelids,
The whole universe stood dazed by her daze, / As though the very earth had ceased to spin.
Mute, neither streaming nor sinking away.
Speechless, aimless, unable to flow.
Nothing around us, nor before us, / Seemed fair to her, though beauty abounded.
فَكَأَنَّهاso she was like بَطَلٌa hero تَكَنَّفَهُsurrounded him العِدىthe enemies
بِسُيوفِهِمwith their swords وَحُسامُهُand his sword مَكسورُbroken
She was like a hero whom foes surrounded
It was as if she were a hero surrounded by foes,
The brook fell silent as if shrouded in earth, / And the breeze drifted absent-mindedly, as if in panic.
With their swords, while his own sword was broken.
With their swords, while his sword is broken.
As if the illuminated firmament were a wasteland, / And the radiant stars within it were graves.
وَجَمَتshe fell silent فَأَمسىso became كُلُّevery شَيءٍthing واجِماًsilent with grief
النورthe light وَالأَظلالand the shadows وَالدَيجورُand the deep darkness
She fell silent, and everything grew silent:
Everything fell silent as night descended,
She used to jest and laugh with me, but now / The time for jesting ended; her laughter turned to brooding.
The light, the shadows, and the deepest darkness.
Light and shadows and the dark.
She said, as sorrow stripped the smile from her face: / "True was he who said that life is but a delusion."
الكَونُthe universe أَجمَعُentire ذاهِلٌdazed لِذُهولِهاby her bewilderment
حَتّىso much that كَأَنَّas though الأَرضَthe earth لَيسَdoes not تَدورُrevolve
The whole universe was dazed by her bewilderment,
The whole universe distraught at her distraughtness,
"Do we die like this, and do our dreams expire / In a single moment, as we turn to dust?"
So much so that the earth seemed not to revolve.
As if the earth itself had ceased to spin.
"And do earthworms ripple through the hearts within, / Where hopes and desires once surged and swelled?"
لاno شَيءَthing مِمّاof what حَولَناaround us وَأَمامَناand before us

حَسَنٌbeautiful لَدَيهاto her وَالجَمالُand beauty كَثيرُabundant
Nothing of what was around us or before us
Nothing around or ahead of us
"Better off than us are those never born, / And better than humankind are the boulders and rocks."
Was beautiful to her, though beauty was abundant.
Seemed beautiful, for all beauty was much.
"Better than eyes are mere kohl-jars and wands, / And better than lips are cosmetic dusts and powders."
سَكَتَfell silent الغَديرُthe brook كَأَنَّماas though اِلتَحَفَwrapped itself in الثَرىthe soil
وَسَهاand became distracted النَسيمُthe breeze كَأَنَّهُas though it were مَذعورُterrified
The brook fell silent, as though it had wrapped itself in soil,
The stream fell silent as if embracing the ground,
"And better than hearts throbbing with passion / Are hollow reeds where the wind whistles through."
And the breeze grew distracted, as though terrified.
The breeze quiet as if terrified.
She paused, and I felt, in the wake of her words, / That existence was chaotic and severed.
وَكَأَنَّماand as though الفَلَكُthe firmament المُنَوَّرُilluminated بَلقَعٌa barren waste
وَالأَنجُمُand the stars الزَهراءُradiant فيهِin it قُبورُgraves
The illuminated firmament seemed a barren waste,
The glowing heavens became a patchwork,
Summer breathed its heat all around us, / Yet I felt as though I were shivering with cold.
And its radiant stars were graves.
The shining stars within it graves.
She drove doubts into my heart, ruining / My night—for there is no joy where doubt resides.
كانَتshe used to تُمازِحُنيtease me وَتَضحَكَُand laugh فَاِنتَهىso ended
دَورُthe time of المِزاحِjesting فَضِحكَهاso her laughter تَفكيرُthought
She had been teasing me and laughing; now gone was
She used to joke with me and laugh – but that time has passed,
I feared that love, amidst such doubt, would become / Like a sketch of flowers that holds no scent.
The time for jesting; her laughter turned to thought.
Her laughter now deep thought.
Or like a sculptor's statue: possessing magnificent beauty / That fills the eye, yet devoid of all feeling.
قالَتshe said وَقَدand had سَلَخَstripped away اِبتِسامَتَهاher smile الأَسىgrief

صَدَقَspoke truly الَّذيthe one who قالَsaid الحَياةُlife غُرورُdelusion
She said, grief having stripped away her smile:
She said – and her smile was stripped away by sorrow –
So I answered her: "Let the worms of the earth / Have our bodies; for bodies are but husks."
He spoke truly who said: life is delusion.
“He who said life is an illusion told the truth.”
"Do not despair, for death cannot harm us; / We shall have a return after it, and a resurrection."
أَكَذاis this how نَموتwe die وَتَنقَضيand end أَحلامُناour dreams

فيin لَحظَةan instant وَإِلىand into التُرابِdust نَصيرُwe turn
Is this how we die, and our dreams come to an end
"We shall remain after all mankind passes, / And this visible world fades away."
In an instant, and we turn to dust?
Can we thus die, our dreams destroyed,
"For love is an eternal, ever-renewing light; / It sets only to shine forth again as light."
وَتَموجُand surge ديدانُthe worms of الثَرىthe soil فيin أَكبُدٍlivers

And worms of the soil swarm through livers
And in an instant turn to dust?
"The children of love are their dreams and their visions, / Not mere eyes, nor lips, nor bosoms."
Where hopes once surged and seethed?
With earthworms writhing in a corpse
"So when the earth hides us away from its blossoms, / And the night is void of us, though the moons remain,"
خَيرٌbetter إِذَنthen مِنّاthan us الأُلىthose who لَمnot يولَدواwere born

وَمِنَand than الأَنامِhumankind جَلامِدboulders وَصُخورُand rocks
Better than us, then, are those who were never born,
Once filled with wishes that came and went?
"You shall return as a fragrant garden thicket, / And I, within its branches, an enchanted nightingale,"
And better than humankind are boulders and rocks;
Better than us are those never born,
"Singing to it, flitting through its corners, / While it trembles with joy as he sings and takes flight."
وَمِنَand than العُيونِthe eyes مَكاحِلkohl pots وَمَراوِدٌand kohl applicators

And better than eyes are kohl pots and applicators,
And people like statues of rock.
"Or you will be a shimmering, chanting brook, / And I, within it, a laughing wave and a murmur."
And better than lips are cosmetic powders and dusting powders,
Eyes with kohl, tempting glances,
"Or you shall return as a graceful, swaying butterfly, / And I, in its wings, the refracted morning light."
وَمِنَand than القُلوبِthe hearts الخافِقاتِthrobbing صَبابَةًwith longing

And better than hearts throbbing with longing
Lips with cosmetics, the plucked and depilated.
"Or a breeze—and I its whisper and rustle— / Forever roaming the hills, circling around,"
Are reeds that whistle at the wind's impact.
Hearts that flutter like moths
"Visiting the thickets in the morning, dewy and moist, / And returning at dusk, laden with perfume."
وَتَوَقَّفَتand she stopped فَشَعَرتُso I felt بَعدَafter حَديثِهاher words
أَنَّthat الوُجودَexistence مُشَوَّشٌdisordered مَبتورُcut short
She stopped, and after her words I felt
Are reeds making music in the winds.
"Or we might meet, near a melancholy soul, in contentment / And peace—as a willow tree and a stream."
That existence was disordered and cut short.
She fell silent and I felt, after her talk,
"Her roots extending into him and his soil, / While he flows and wanders beneath her boughs."
الصَيفُsummer يَنفُثُbreathes out حَرَّهَُits heat مِنfrom حَولِناaround us

وَأَناand I أُحِسُّfeel كَأَنَّنيas though I am مَقرورُchilled
Summer was breathing its heat all around us,
That existence itself was disturbed and severed.
"Her reflection dives into him, and he embraces it; / It shimmers—at once concealed and diffused."
Yet I felt as though I were chilled.
Summer breathes its heat around us
"Seeking shelter in them, when the midday heat grows fierce, / Are those two hermits: the gazelle and the sparrow."
ساقَتshe drove إِلىinto قَلبيmy heart الشُكوكَdoubts فَنَغَّصَتso embittered

لَيليmy night وَلَيسَand there is no مَعَwith الشُكوكِdoubts سُرورُjoy
She drove doubts into my heart and embittered
And I feel as though I am scorched.
"They find her tranquility and her spreading shade, / And the water, should they thirst, is abundant in him."
My night; there is no joy with doubts.
Doubts crept into my heart, poisoning
"Two wonders: hanging emeralds, growing lush, / While beneath them flows liquid crystal."
وَخَشيتُand I feared أَنthat يَغدوwould become مَعَwith الرَيبِdoubt الهَوىlove
كَالرَسمِlike a painting لاno عِطرfragrance وَفيهِand in it زُهورُflowers
And I feared that, with doubt, love would become
My night – for doubts bring no joy.
"Neither morning nor darkness comes between them; / For each is submerged within the other."
Like a painting with flowers in it but no fragrance,
I feared passion might, with suspicion,
"Days pass in succession, yet she remains fresh, / With verdant leaves, and he remains pure water."
وَكَدُميَةِand like the statue of المَثّالِthe sculptor حُسنٌbeauty رائِعٌsplendid
مِلءُfilling العُيونthe eyes وَلَيسَand there is not ثَمَّthere شُعورُfeeling
And like a sculptor's statue: magnificent beauty
Become like art – no scent in its flowers.
"So all of time, for her, is bliss, / And all of time, for him, is joy."
Filling the eyes, yet without feeling.
Like the example’s beauty – eyes fill, but there is
Then she smiled, and contentment dawned upon her face, / Pleased by this imagery and this portrayal.
فَأَجَبتُهاso I answered her لِتَكُنlet be لِديدانِfor the worms of الثَرىthe soil
أَجسامُناour bodies إِنَّindeed الجُسومَbodies قُشورُhusks
So I answered her: let the worms of the soil have
No feeling. So I told her: let our bodies
I treated her with illusion, and she found peace— / How often anesthesia aids the one in pain!
Our bodies, for bodies are mere husks.
Be for earthworms, bodies are but shells.
Then we parted, laughing, until the morrow, / While the stars above us whispered and beckoned.
لاdo not تَجزَعيbe distressed فَالمَوتُfor death لَيسَdoes not يَضيرُناharm us

فَلَناfor we have إِيابٌa return بَعدَهafter it وَنُشورُand resurrection
Do not despair; death does not harm us,
Do not grieve, for death does not hurt us.
She was like a traveler returned after hardship, / And I felt like a victorious commander.
For after it we have a return and resurrection.
We have an afterlife and resurrection.
But when I finally retired to my bed, / The mattress felt rough beneath me, though it was soft.
إِنّاindeed we سَنَبقىwill remain بَعدَafter أَنthat يَمضيpasses away الوَرىhumankind

وَيَزولُand disappears هَذاthis العالَمُworld المَنظورُvisible
We shall remain after humankind passes away
We will remain when this visible world fades,
My lamp's light weakened, its breath flickering / And stammering, like one suffering consumption.
And this visible world vanishes.
This realm that passes away.
I cast my gaze upon a book, but it appeared / Like an obliterated ruin containing lines.
فَالحُبُّfor love نورٌa light خالِدٌeternal مُتَجَدِّدٌever-renewed
لاdoes not يَنطَويwithdraw إِلّاexcept لِيَسطَعُso that it may shine نورُlight
For love is an eternal, ever-renewed light:
For love is eternal light, renewed,
I drank the daughter of the vine, seeking comfort there, / But my calculation and judgment went astray.
It withdraws only so that light may shine.
That only wanes to shine brighter.
I felt like a ship whose rigging had snapped, / With the sea raging and rising around it.
وَبَنوand the children of الهَوىlove أَحلامُهُمtheir dreams وَرُؤاهُمُand their visions
لاnot أَعيُنeyes وَمَراشِفand lips وَنُحورُand throats
And the children of love are their dreams and visions,
The dreams and visions of love’s children
A worry seized me, robbing my heart of its peace / And my eyelids of sleep—leaving both tormented.
Not eyes and lips and throats.
Are not eyes, pillows, breasts.
Doubts hovered over my soul, as if my soul / Were prey, and the doubts were hawks.
فَإِذاso when طَوَتناfolds us away الأَرضُthe earth عَنfrom أَزهارِهاits flowers

So when earth folds us away from its flowers,
When earth covers its flowers and we leave darkness,
I sought refuge in Hope, but it forsook me; / As for Imagination, it lay defeated and crushed.
And night is empty of us, with full moons in it,
You will return fragrant as jasmine,
"O Night, where is the light? For I am lost. / Command it to break forth—or do you possess no light?"
فَسَتَرجُعينَso you will return خَميلَةًa grove مِعطارَةًfragrant

You will return as a fragrant grove,
And I a nightingale enchanted in its branches,
"Do we die like this, and do our dreams expire / In a single moment, as we turn to dust?"
I will be an enchanted nightingale in its treetops,
Singing as I alight and take flight.
"Better off than us are those never born, / And better than humankind are the stones and rocks."

Singing to it and flying through its reaches;
Or a brook, rippling, murmuring,
It will rejoice when I sing and when I fly.
With me as its chuckling, babbling wave.

Or as a rippling, singing stream,
Or a butterfly flitting by,
I, within it, a laughing wave and a murmur;
My dawn woven in its wings.
أَوor تَرجِعينَyou return فَراشَةًa butterfly خَطّارَةًflitting

Or you will return as a flitting butterfly,
A breeze – my whispering and rustling –
I, the prismatic morning light in its wings;
Circling the meadows without end.

Or as a breeze: I, its whisper and its rustle,
I visit the buds in the morn with dew,
That forever roams and circles among the hills.
And when they open, my scent is their scent.

It visits the groves in the morning, dewy,
We meet in resignation by the stream,
And returns, when it returns, as fragrance.
Contentment, willow, and sparrow.

Or there will meet beside the sorrowful one, in willing accord
They share its stillness and shaded shelter,
And contentment, a willow and a brook.
Its water to quench their thirst.

Two miracles – emerald, turquoise –
And he flows and glides beneath her branches;
One sleeping, the other flowing clear.

Her reflection plunges into him, enfolding him,
No dawn comes between, no dusk,
And shines through, at once enfolded and outspread.
Each enveloped completely in light.

To them, when the midday heat grows fierce, come for shelter
Days pass by, fresh and verdant,
The two hermits, the gazelle and the sparrow.
Green leaves and blossoming fruit.

They have her calm and her ample shade,
So time gives them its all –
And if they thirst, his water is abundant.
Pleasure and joy forevermore.

Two marvels: drooping chrysolite,
She smiled, liking my imagery and painting.
Growing, with crystal pouring beneath it.
I cured her with fantasy – now she is serene.
لاneither الصُبحُmorning بَينَهُماbetween them يَحولintervenes وَلاnor الدُجىdarkness

Neither morning nor darkness comes between them,
How often medicine alleviates pain!
For each is immersed in the other.
Then we parted, laughing until tomorrow,
تَتَعاقَبُsucceed one another الأَيّامthe days وَهيَand she is نَضيرَةٌfresh

The days succeed one another, and she remains fresh,
With shooting stars murmuring above us.
Her leaves green, while he remains clear and sweet.
She seemed a traveler returned after hardship,
فَالدَهرُfor time أَجمَعَهُall of it لَدَيهاfor her غِبطَةٌbliss

For her, all time is bliss,
While I was like a victorious leader.
And for him, all time is delight.

So she smiled, and contentment appeared upon her face,
The mattress felt rough and hard.
For the likeness and the imagery delighted her.
My lamp had dimmed and flickered out,
عالَجتُهاI treated her بِالوَهمِwith illusion فَهيَso she is قَريرَةٌat ease
وَلَكَمand how often أَفادَbenefited الموجَعَthe sufferer التَخديرُsedation
I treated her with illusion, and she was at ease;
Its breath extinguished, dead.
And how often sedation has helped the sufferer!
I turned my eyes to a book but could only
ثُمَّthen اِفتَرَقناwe parted ضاحِكَينِboth laughing إِلىuntil غَدٍtomorrow
وَالشُهبُand the bright stars تَهمِسُwhisper فَوقَناabove us وَتُشيرُand gesture
Then we parted laughing, until tomorrow,
Discern blurred lines as if in a sketch.
While the bright stars whispered above us and gestured.
I drank old wine, hoping to relax –
هِيَshe كَالمُسافِرِlike the traveler آبَreturned بَعدَafter مَشَقَّةٍhardship
وَأَناand I كَأَنّيas though I were قائِدٌa commander مَنصورُvictorious
She was like a traveler returned after hardship,
But hopes and predictions were shattered.
And I as though a victorious commander.
لَكِنَّنيbut I لَمّاwhen أَوَيتُretired لِمَضجَعيto my bed
خَشُنَgrew rough الفِراشُthe bedding عَلَيto me وَهوَand it is وَثيرُsoft
But when I retired to my bed,
I was like a ship whose anchors gave way,
The bedding felt rough to me, though it was soft.
The sea swelling and crashing around it.
وَإِذاand behold سِراجيmy lamp قَدhad وَهَتweakened وَتَلَجلَجَتand faltered
أَنفاسُهُits breaths فَكَأَنَّهُso it seemed like المَصدورُone with a chest ailment
And lo, my lamp: weakened and faltering
Grief had seized my heart and lulled my eyes –
Were its breaths, as though it suffered a chest ailment.
Both bereft and severed.
وَأَجَلتُand I cast طَرفيmy gaze فيin الكِتابِthe book فَلاحَso it appeared ليto me
كَالرَسمِlike a drawing مَطموساeffaced وَفيهِand in it سُطورُlines of writing
And I cast my gaze through the book; it appeared to me
Doubts, like eagles descended upon my soul,
Like an effaced drawing, though lines of writing were in it.
And it was as if they were prey and the doubts predators.
وَشَرِبتُand I drank بِنتَthe daughter of الكَرمِthe vine أَحسَبُI thought راحَتيmy relief
فيهاin her فَطاشَso went astray الظَنthe guess وَالتَقديرُand the judgment
And I drank the daughter of the vine, thinking my relief
I resorted to hope but it failed me;
Lay in her; but my guess and judgment went astray.
As for imagination, it was defeated and exiled.
فَكَأَنَّنيso I was like فُلكٌa ship وَهَتَweakened أَمراسُهاits cables
وَالبَحرُand the sea يَطغىoverflows حَولَهاaround it وَيَثورُand rages
So I was like a ship whose cables had weakened,
O night! Where is light? I am lost –
While the sea surged around it and raged.
Is there no ray from you I can follow?
سَلَبَrobbed الفُؤادَthe heart رَواهits refreshment وَالجَفنَand the eyelid الكَرىsleep
هَمٌّan anguish عَراassailed فَكِلاهُماso both of them مَوتورُbereft
The heart was robbed of its refreshment, and the eyelid of sleep,
Can we thus die, our dreams destroyed,
By an anguish that assailed me; both were bereft.
And in an instant turn to dust?
حامَتcircled عَلىover روحيmy soul الشُكوكُdoubts كَأَنَّهاas though it were
وَكَأَنَّهُنَّand as though they were فَريسَةprey وَصُقورُand falcons
Doubts circled above my soul, as though it were
Better than us are those never born,
Prey, and as though they were falcons.
And people like statues of rock.
وَلَقَدand indeed لَجَأتُI sought refuge إِلىin الرَجاءِhope فَعَقَّنيso it betrayed me
أَمّاas for الخَيالُimagination فَخائِبٌso thwarted مَدحورُrepulsed
I sought refuge in hope, but it betrayed me;
As for imagination, it was thwarted and repulsed.
ياO لَيلُnight أَينَwhere النورُthe light إِنّيindeed I am تائِهٌlost
مُرcommand يَنبَثِقlet it burst forth أَمor لَيسَis there no عِندَكَwith you نورُlight
O night, where is the light? I am lost.
Bid it burst forth—or have you no light?
أَكَذاis this how نَموتwe die وَتَنقَضيand end أَحلامُناour dreams
فيin لَحظَةan instant وَإِلىand into التُرابِdust نَصيرُwe turn
Is this how we die, and our dreams come to an end
In an instant, and we turn to dust?
خَيرٌbetter إِذَنthen مِنّاthan us الأُلىthose who لَمnot يولَدواwere born
وَمِنَand than الأَنامِhumankind جَنادِلboulders وَصُخورُand rocks
Better than us, then, are those who were never born,
And better than humankind are boulders and rocks.
