She said: You described to us the nectar and its cup,

And its victim, its cupbearer, and the wine-presser,

And the field, and the farmer walking through it,

At evening, tending the moving herd.

And I stood beside the sea, its waves roaring,

So with words I brought back a roaring sea.

You portrayed on paper even the passing thought,

Captivating us and enchanting even the enchanter.

And showed us a garden in every wasteland,

And showed us a bird in every garden.

Yet when one man asks another about you,

You see a bewildered man addressing another bewildered man.

Who are you, you there? I said to her: I am

Like electricity: I am seen, hidden yet manifest.

She said: By your life, you have deepened my bewilderment.

What harm would it have done you to describe the poet?

So I answered her: He is one who questions himself

    About himself, morning and evening,

And asks the eye the secret of its sleeplessness and sleep,

And the heart the secret of its despair and hope.

Then he is bewildered between his coming and his going,

And bewildered between what lies before him and behind him.

And sees the star's setting before it sets,

And sees a thing's destruction before it is destroyed.

And walks through the lush garden, yet sees nothing

With his eyes but thorns throughout its reaches.

If he sleeps, his spirit's anxieties do not sleep,

And when he wakes, you see him like one lost.

He cares not at all for our laughter and weeping,

And frightens us with his laughter and weeping.

Like fire, his mind devours emotions,

So it kills them and dies in its desert.

She said: Do you know whom you described? I said: Whom?

She said: You described the unbelieving philosopher.

O poet of the world, endowed with sound judgment,

What harm would it have done you to describe the poet?

So I said: He is a man who loves wine,

Just as he loves courting maidens.

When the wine jars are emptied of wine,

He imagines that time has run out.

He quaffs it by the light of the bright stars; and if

They set, he drinks it by the light of day.

And deems the people's festival a funeral

Without wine, and their paradise Hell.

Easily bored, he does not remain loyal,

Yet he does not persist in enmity.

A man of intellect, but without willpower,

And endowed with detachment, yet without asceticism.

He inclines to humor and jesting,

Even amid spearpoints and sword blades.

And is apt to guffaw at a funeral,

And dance like storms in the desert.

If a writer's eye catches sight of him,

Then it has fallen upon a dubious man.

His companions rebuke him, yet he does not reform,

And gray hair admonishes him, yet he does not repent.

Then she said: You have brought exquisite words,

But you have described only a libertine.

And I feared her turning away from me, so I said: Then

He is the one who forever weeps because of time,

As though no youth in the world but him were

Exposed to time's calamities and trials.

He complains of sickness, though his body has no disease,

And of sleeplessness, though he was drowsy only recently,

And of separation, though he is within sight of his loved ones,

And of captivity, though he is free in spirit and body.

And sees nothing beautiful on earth to cherish

Or desire—yet how much beauty there is on earth!

He laments in the garden while the trees are leafy,

As he laments over ruins and the traces of old camps.

Then she interrupted me and said: You have taken us far afield.

These are not the discerning poet's qualities.

    رُبَّما أَخطَأَ الحَكيم وَضَلّا

    I said: Patience if I have strayed, and pardon me;

Sometimes the wise man errs and goes astray.

He is one whose hands draw beauty,

So we see it on the page more alluring and sweeter.

Keen of heart, he plays with the

minds, for sport, if he wishes to amuse himself.

And shows us that what does not last will last,

And shows us that what does not wear out will wear out.

He mints shooting stars into coins for humankind,

Yet complains of poverty whichever way he turns.

Is this not the one you and I wish

To describe? The lovely woman said: No.

O you, I am at a loss to describe him,

And have failed to grasp his hidden qualities.

Wine cannot recount its own qualities,

Nor can the garden describe its flowers and plants.

He is the one we see walking upon the earth,

As though his footsteps were upon his heart.

If he laments, souls are in his tears,

And when he sings, love is in his melodies.

He weeps with the exile for his native lands,

And shares the sorrowful one's tears.

And the days change his beloved's heart,

Yet he remains enamored of his beloved's heart.

He is one who lives for others, yet is thought

By those who do not understand him to live for himself.
