    Since we parted, I have not tasted slumber.

    By God, what parting has done to us!

    الحُبُّ قَد خَلَقَ العَذابَ لَنا

    Tell the carefree: praise is yours;

    love has created torment for us.

    I have not forgotten her words, which filled

    my soul with grief and my breast with sorrow:

    What have we done wrong, that you should leave us?

    Have you tired of us and grown weary of our company?

    So I answered her in an apologetic voice:

    You have done no wrong, nor have I grown weary.

    But I have seen water, freely flowing,

    quench thirst; if it does not flow, it turns stale.

    And if a sword lies idle too long,

    it rusts, and its edge grows rough.

    And if clouds stand still and shed no rain,

    they water neither valleys nor peaks.

    Life with stagnation is grit in the eye,

    but with movement, cheerfulness and bliss.

    حَيثُ الحَياةُ رَغائِبٌ وَمُنى

    Do not reproach me, for villages are my desire,

    where life is filled with desires and hopes;

    لَم تَلتَحِف سِتراً وَلا كَفَنا

    where the stars shine unveiled,

    cloaked in neither a covering nor a shroud;

    وَالطَيرُ يَملَءُ شَدوُها الوُكُنا

    and dawn's pockets are filled with fragrance,

    and the birds' song fills the nests;

    and on the hills the shadows dance,

    and the breeze's hand caresses the branches.

    Alas for the cities! Their inhabitant

    is like a dead man, neither covered with earth nor buried.

    How often I sought rain from their clouds,

    and they poured down—but only affliction and wasting sickness.

    وَلَكَم شَدَوتُ فَلَم أَجِد أُذُنا

    And how often I kept vigil, yet found no moon;

    and how often I sang, yet found no ear.

    If a tuneful nightingale could grow fond of

    a cage, the poet would love cities.

    Humankind hated staying long in them,

    so they invented wheels and ships.

    And I secured a noisy conveyance,

    so I set out, traversing plains and rugged ground,

    with longing driving it and driving me,

    until I reached the lovely abode.

    Stop, O train, at their homesteads:

    the loved ones, O train, are here.

    These are their homes, smiling in welcome to us—

    you are mistaken: rather, these are our homes.

    Not one of them has settled in a place

    without its becoming a homeland for us all.

    Syria in Kant is a melody,

    sweet; and Lebanon is fragrance and radiance.

    If the bright stars go out, then in

    these faces lies all we need instead of stars.

    And if life folds away its beauties

    from me, and its bliss turns to affliction,

    I picture them in my mind, and suddenly

    my world contains worlds of joy.

    مَن يَنتَهِزهُ يَنَل رِضىً وَثَنا

    O people, this day is yours;

    whoever seizes it will gain approval and praise.

    السُحبُ أَنفَعُها الَّذي هَتَنا

    So let your hands open in generosity;

    of clouds, the most useful is the one that pours rain.

    I see no young man like the miser,

    who wastes away and grows lean whenever he grows fat.

    Whoever does not build a monument with his wealth,

    or gain favors with his wealth,

    and lives like a spider, will live

    among people, blamed and despised.

    So build and raise high, to honor a man

    who has so often labored for you and built.

    A homeland and a people seek refuge with you:

    will you then forsake the people and the homeland?

    فَتَجَمَّدي بِبَنيكِ يا قَطَنا

    Qatana, your sons have risen today;

    so glory in your sons, O Qatana (probable intended reading).
