بذلت وإن ضنوا وفيت وإن خانوا

1. I gave though they were stingy, and kept faith though they betrayed.
My loved ones - yet I'm not so indebted as they professed.

١. بذلتُ وإِن ضَنُّوا وَفَيْت وإِنْ خَانوا
أَحبّايَ لكِنْ ما أَدينُ كما دانوا

2. My joy appears in my gaze when they show themselves to me,
Just as my heart revealed itself when first they came to light.

٢. يبين سروري ين بانُوا لناظري
كما أَن قَلْبي بانَ عَنِّي مُذ بانوا

3. Living seemed vile when they went away from me,
Just as, when they were disgraced, the noblest became base in my eyes.

٣. لقد عز عِنْدِي أَن أَعيشَ إِذا نأََوْا
كما هانَ عِنْدي أَنَّ أَعِزَّ إِذَا هَانوا

4. They were equitable in killing my soul, and did not transgress,
They were true in possessing my heart, and did not betray.

٤. وقد عدلوا في قَتْلِ نَفْسِي وما اعتَدَوْا
وقد صَدقُوا في مِلْك قَلْبي وما خَانُوا

5. Yes, they abandoned and opposed and held aloof and avoided me,
They forgot and were harsh - yet in all this they were not to blame.

٥. نعم هَجَرُوا صدُّوا تَجنَّوا تَجنَّبُوا
تَنَاسَوْا تَقاسَوْا كُلُّ هَذَا ولاَ كَانُوا

6. And the verb of appellations is derived from their noun:
So comrades betrayed, and neighbors deserted.

٦. ويُشْتَق فعلُ المسَمياتِ من اسْمِهَا
لذا خَانَ إِخوانٌ لذا جَارَ جِيرانُ

7. In me is the sweetness of the eyes, the saliva, and the ornaments -
In me the gazelle, the branch, and the bright moon are gathered.

٧. وبي حُلْوَةُ العينينِ والريقِ والحلي
تجمّع فيها الظبيُ والغصنُ والبَانُ

8. I am beauty embodied, the perfect full moon,
I am the gazelle, the tender branch, the sapling luxuriant.

٨. هي الحسنُ مَجْمُوعٌ هِيَ البدرُ كَامِلٌ
هي الظَّبيُ وسْنَانٌ هي الغصُن فَيْنَانُ
