1. The sun never rose, yet how it tarnished
The cheek's page like a polished sword.
١. لا كَانتِ الشَّمسُ فكَمْ أَصْدَأَتْ
صفحةَ خدٍّ كالحُسام الصَّقيلْ
2. How often, how often did it repel
In the valley of Al-Kara the specter of a friend who came to me from a beloved.
٢. وكَمْ وكَمْ صدَّت بِوادِي الكَرى
طيفَ خَيَالٍ جاءَني من خَلِيلْ
3. It deprived me of the stars of nightfall,
And of a garden therein with shaded shade.
٣. وأَعْدَمَتْني من نُجوم الدُّجَى
ومنه رَوْضاً بين ظِلٍّ ظليل
4. It lies in the covenant and its proof
Is that a mirage of the desert comes from it smooth.
٤. تَكْذِبُ في العَهْد وبرهانُه
أَن سرابَ القَفْر منها سَليلْ
5. And it reckons the river a sword that then
Becomes tired and describes therein the heart of the miserable.
٥. وتَحسبُ النَّهر حُساماً فتر
تاعُ وتحكي فيه قلبَ الذَّليل
6. If the eyelid tarnishes, its burnishing
Is only to adorn with a beautiful love.
٦. إِن صَدأَ الطرف فما صَقْلُه
إِلاَّ التحلِّي بِمُحَيّاً جَمِيل
7. And when an observer sees it,
It is the iron of an eyelid from which chains fell.
٧. وهي إِذا أَبصرها مُبصِرٌ
حديدُ طرفٍ رَاحَ عنها كَليلْ
8. O lump of the anxious, O skin of the
Afflicted, O moan of slender youth.
٨. يا غُلَّة المهْمُوم يا جِلدةَ ال
مَحْمُوم يا زَفْرةَ صبٍّ نحيل
9. O sore of the east at noon
And weapon of the west at nightfall.
٩. يا قُرحَة المشرق وقْتَ الضُّحى
وسَلحَةَ المغربِ وقْتَ الأَصيل
10. You are an old woman, why did you adorn yourself for me
And from you drips saliva that flows?
١٠. أَنتِ عجوزٌ لِمْ تَبرَّجْتِ لي
وقَدْ بَدا منكِ لُعابٌ يَسيل
11. You are coupled with Satan,
So how can you guide us to the right path?
١١. وأَنتِ بالشَّيطانِ قَرْنانَةٌ
فكَيفَ تهدينَا سواءَ السَّبيل
