1. O bewilderment of truth when the guide was absent,
And desolation of religion when the caller grew dark.

2. O family of Abd Manaf, what misfortune
That befell the living, nay cast him down the valley.

3. O Quraish, giver of hospitality, from the mount of your stranger
And who doused the fire of Adnan with extinguishing.

4. O nation of Islam, your mother
Bereaved with the purest dead above the stakes.

5. So O gloating of disabling and sophistry
And O joy of polytheism and atheism.

6. O you who is silent under arranged rocks
Nay residing between intestines and livers.

7. O you residing amidst a grave whose place
Is between the palace of Abu Dharr and Miqdad.

8. O you who was like thousands we reckoned him
Not one reckoned by units.

9. O you the pure, your purity
Permeating the soul, body, clothes and provisions.

10. None remains after you hoping for guidance
None remains after you called for direction.

11. None remains protecting his sanctity
From the enemy’s plot and the assailant’s attack.

12. None remains after you an abundant sea, ever
Flooded by the jostling of drinkers and churners.

13. None remains after you whose exploits
Quench even the tongues of foes and adversaries.

14. None remains after you whose news of pillars
Amuse wine or the singer sings.

15. None remains after you who if he argues
God supports him with victory and supplies.

16. None remains after you who in merit he gathers
Apparent in the beginning and ending demonstrations.

17. If I sought an alternative or compensation for you
In both worlds, I have burdened frequenters.

18. The sky cries for a sun shining from you
Under the soil and your star that guided.

19. And religion slaps its cheeks and temple
After tearing of clothes and shedding innocence.

20. The chapters of Qur’an cried so hear
The moan of “noon” and “saad” by the heart’s hearing.

21. And Halab howled the howl of a bereaved mother
It was heard from the land of Baghdad.

22. It says, “Woe to my intestines for a son
Who was the best of my sons and children.”

23. And Egypt, though it is consoled
By the grave venting of sorrows and agonies.

24. And knowledge screams “Woe to me
From fate that killed the best of my aides.”

25. And Islamic law, when it met fate, blamed it
And said “Woe unto you, you have delighted my enemies.”

26. Fasting said “Alas my fervor.”
And night said “Woe is me, who will perform my rituals.”

27. And for the angels enclosing his bier, a funeral dirge
Filling the valleys and heights with laments.

28. Crowding under purified limbs
To carry them to fathers and ancestors.

29. Ridwan gave him good tidings upon his arrival
Though he had hoped to be his redeemer.

30. Rather, would that I were his redeemer
With my soul, wealth and children.

31. My heart is captive to him, with no relief
My patience upon him is slain, with no course.

32. Had he lived he would have been my close friend and brought me near,
But God wanted to distance me.

33. He would help me with knowledge and bring me joy,
But my fate was stingy with my aid and joy.

34. And my soul knew when he passed
The day of my misery is the day of my birth.

35. Mourn him, for you without him
Are like cattle and beasts of burden.

36. And cry for him with ulcerated eyelids
That drip pairs of tears, not solitary.

37. Ridwan and forgiveness watered your tomb
I do not say the passing wind quenched you.

38. For you are alive in the soil, aware and delighted
You pay heed to my persona, nay listen to my chant.

39. With me I see him, and in the desert his grave,
O the fervor of a heart for one present yet departed.

40. For me each day, with days, a misfortune
Pounces, preying on my lions and wolves.

41. His calamities come to me on a promise
Though often they surprise me without appointment.

42. Whenever you wish, take news of your master
From me, for I narrate them with authority.
