1. Woe to a soul adorned
With fluttering eyelids
١. ويح نفسٍ مُغَطَّرَه
بجُفُونٍ مُفَتَّره
2. Whose beauty slays
A sin yet forgiveness
٢. يقتل الصبَّ حُسْنُها
فَهْي ذَنْبٌ ومَغْفِرَه
3. What eye upon the fawn
Is not lined with kohl?
٣. أيُّ عينٍ عَلَى العيو
نِ جَمِيعاً مؤمَّره
4. All kohl but longing
Leaves bitterness in her lids
٤. كُلُّ كُحْلٍ سوى التَّكَحُّ
لِ في جَفْنِها مَرَه
5. She is beauty embodied
And tipsiness sobered
٥. وهي للحُسْنِ جَامِعٌ
وهْي للسُّكر دَسْكَره
6. If you saw his face
You'd say, would that I hadn't
٦. وجهه لو رأَيْتَه
قُلْتَ يَا لَيْتَ لَمْ أَرْه
7. He ensnares hearts with love
With enchained spirits
٧. يَصْرِف الخَلْقَ في الهوى
بِقُلوبٍ محسَّره
8. A mocking heart to hearts
That to him are enslaved
٨. سَاخِرُ القلب من قلو
ب لَدَيْه مُسَخَّره
9. With a feminine charm
And masculine airs
٩. ذو دلالٍ مُؤَنَّثٍ
وَسَجَايَا مُذَكَّره
10. In him a hermaphrodite
Though manliness often appears
١٠. فيه خَنَثٌ وربَّما
ظَهَرَتْ منه زَنْطَرَه
11. At home a coddled pearl
In the market, a bold lion
١١. فهو في البيتِ عَبْلَةٌ
وهو في السوقِ عَنْتَره
12. My teary glances to his face
Are scattered pearls
١٢. نظراتي لِوَجْهِهِ
بِدُمُوعي مُعَثَّره
13. The eye has tasted in his bend
Sweetness and bitterness
١٣. ذاقت العين من محيَّ
اهُ مِلْحاً وسُكَّرهْ
14. The dimple his moles
The blush his embers
١٤. فمن النَّد خَالُه
ومن الخَدِّ مُجْمَره
15. His cheek a garden
With blooming flowers
١٥. خدُّه فيه رَوْضَةٌ
بالأَزَاهِير مُزْهِرَه
16. So soft as if
The kiss of evil was fated
١٦. رقَّ حتَّى كأَنما
لَثْمةُ السُّوءِ مُقْدَرَه
17. His cheek a pendant
Where my heart is chained
١٧. صدْغُه صُوْلجانَةٌ
حَيْثُ قَلْبي لَهُ كُرَه
18. Vexing me over his cheek
Premature hairs
١٨. غاظني فوق خَدِّه
شَعرات مبكِّرَه
19. Come before their time
For fated matters
١٩. قد أَتت قُبْلُ وقْتِهَا
لأُمُورٍ مقدَّرَه
20. The sheen of his cheek reveals
It bears a panther
٢٠. دلَّ دِيباجُ خدِّه
أَنها فيه زئبره
21. Blame not his love for faults
If he is corrupt
٢١. لا تلم حبَّه عَلَي
هِ إِذَا كان ذا شِره
22. Nor rebuke him, becoming
A inhibiter of sin
٢٢. لا ولاَ تَلْحَهَ تكُو
ن عَلَى الذَّنبِ زَاجِره
23. For sins come from humans
And forgiveness from the Divine
٢٣. فمن العَبْد زَلَّةٌ
ومن الرَّب مَغْفِرَه
