1. My heart went with them, may its pearls be sacrificed for Him,
I was glad when he went with those who please him,

2. And no blemish appeared when he turned away from me,
But a blemish did appear when his excuse turned away.

3. He showed patience until it was said his patience was evident,
Yes, by God, his excellent patience was evident.

4. He passed by, neither the delusion of comfort entices him,
Nor does beautiful patience charm him into error.

5. The eyes of the living pursued his full moon,
So he was saved from them because it is his place of rest.

6. If they know he belongs to a lover,
They attribute the kingdom that is his palace to him.

7. As for his waist, it is the edge of him,
And his edge is his waist, in sickness.

8. He has a writer on his cheek and the writing is his line,
To a poet in his mouth, and poetry is his poetry.

9. In which house will his writing be read after us?
Or his poetry recited after us?

10. His night of desire, his day of longing and his poetry
Appear longer than the beloved's estrangement and beauty.

11. The tears of my eyelids are not blood, rather
The ember of my heart melted with the water of tears.

12. In aloofness there is fracture, and in nearness there is healing,
On the cheek there is a coin, and on the eyelid there is breakage.

13. It is the garden of beauty that is not encompassed by its fruit,
Rather its fruit encompassed consciences.

14. I enjoyed it then refrained from it,
And the bitterness of its sweet paradise did not fulfill in the mouth of my heart.

15. Does passion hope that I will prolong its stay?
By the life of passion, its life with me will not be long!

16. To broaden a person’s chest with passion and desire
I have abandoned passion for the one whose chest is constricted.

17. I have been nothing but one who contends with fate
Contention, until fate asks for peace.

18. I have a hope whose night has almost darkened,
But its dawn has almost emerged.

19. The ardent lover, the ambitious one, is never seen
Thinking little of obstacles in his goal.

20. He claims the full moon is among what leads him on,
And the star is among what pulls him.

21. I say to him, this is the enemy and his deceit!
He says yes, this is the enemy and his grave!

22. There is arrogance in the chest, although I have reached it -
Its pearls will be revealed to you in my praise.

23. A sword, but its edge is in eloquence,
And its knot is in the neck of intricate speech.

24. For most people my dispraise of them,
And for the distinguished, my gratitude to them.

25. Made of them and in them, my praise in verse,
And my prose composed of them and in them.

26. His greatest pride is that his grandfather was His servant,
So it came down to the son of the son through inheritance.

27. His wealth came from Him when he had need of Him,
Although before that his wealth was his poverty.

28. My lasting treasure from His palms is His generosity,
Just as consciousness of the Creator of fate is its treasure.

29. He saw that consciousness of God is the most beneficial provision,
So he increased it until it heavily burdened his back.

30. The world came to him but he passed by it turning away,
While his passage was in the piousness of God.

31. He disdains the world through religion, yet
His humility is in obeying God.

32. Religion lived through him, not its opposite lived,
Just as poverty died through him, not his mention died.

33. They mentioned the encircling sea, yet in truth
He is the sea of which the sea is but a river.

34. How much wealth he has, but his wealth is for praise,
And he was frugal, but his frugality was for dispraise.

35. How many captives were freed by his generosity
Although his generosity had made him captive.

36. Fetters of iron bound him among the Franks,
While compassion bound him in the house of his blessings.

37. He brought him to the abode of rest after
His recovery from tribulations and his testing.

38. When we wrote his praise the pages
Shone - no, the ink almost turned white.

39. So do not describe him as minister out of ignorance,
For he transcends the worth of ministry in his worth.

40. Rightfully, the kingdom is his after God, because through him
The kingdom's pillars grew firm and its bonds strengthened.

41. He monopolized management so the saying is his saying,
Despite those who oppose him while the command is his command.

42. His enemies in creation failed in their purpose,
And those who plotted against him were deprived of victory.

43. He contends while the opinions in war are his white swords,
And he stabs while the pens in peace are his spearheads.

44. The battle of calumny is none other than his book,
Its knights the words and its rows its lines.

45. When his eloquence seduces the enemies I say to them:
“This is rhetoric and its magic!”

46. Indeed these heights neither diminished in horizon,
Nor did this glory disappear from the people in its bloom.

47. They said it is him, so let the people of his time rejoice,
I said, despite the ages and his time.

48. It is pride for a country in which he stayed, for he
Follows it over the seven continents.

49. O good fortune of the Levant since his ascending star
Brought it good fortune or his rain poured on it.

50. Damascus was fortunate with his nearness to it
Just as Egypt was wretched in its distance from him.

51. Egypt wept until its Nile increased through tears,
At the time when it was ebbing.

52. Its people became at daybreak
Like a full moon that disappeared in the west.

53. Both in these two states they are his servants,
And every country that he stayed in, it is his Egypt.

54. If its dawn appeared through him then it is his face,
And if its meadows bloomed then it is his mention.
