1. My wishful heart, you restless roamer
Each day in love with someone new

2. Though your love's image is my amulet
My love-sick devil makes me his disciple

3. Since you captivated my eyes with your bow
My tears in your beauty are peerless

4. Your red lips, your callous heart
Are thorns and iron through and through

5. Your mouth a string of polished pearls
Though fools call you a bursting bud

6. The critic's the fool, the ignorant wise
And the libertine a righteous guide

7. I hunt gazelles, not to catch them
But so that the gazelle hunter provides

8. My icy heart melted for your face
Yet still the sun melts solid ice

9. You're seen, but from afar - that's how
The sun is seen from far and wide

10. My golden one, you have undone me
My precious tears, you are denied

11. With the memory of you we have wasted away
Eye for eye and hand for hand

12. No watchman of mine was absent
No guard of mine inept inside

13. My guard and warden hugged me close
Then spread his arms to catch his bride

14. That time has passed and gone, it faded
Praise God, who never fades or dies!

15. You made my hair turn white before
Its time, for your beauty multiplies

16. To me Eid day was seeing you
Now Eid day is a day of chiding

17. Jewels to me are gravel stones
Branches are but dry date fronds

18. You made me old, apart from where
That lofty dome was fortified

19. King Abdullah's, where earth's kings
Are slaves, and he their glorious guide

20. Longing, I've strayed to where I'll gain
A lofty verse that's verified

21. I'll reap the fruits of soaring hopes
To profit and gratify the soul inside

22. Gather the clan and gain the heights
Then in bereavement petrified

23. To the Sanctuary I must wind my way
Of glorious grace and kindness magnified

24. The Master, dragging his robes, confused
For Master, son of Judge besides

25. God humbled him till how many lions
Became his slaves, though they were dignified

26. Time has divided his enemies in two
Destroyed or exiled far and wide

27. They were mountains, now but pebbles
Nay, they've become his harvested chaff outside

28. Enough he's guided by God's will
He walks, nobles surround his side

29. Yet in his glory he's alone
His wealth resembles none beside

30. He returns gifts, no sooner given
Than asked, with increase he provides

31. Who seeks provision, gains far more
For his guests, open-handed, dignified

32. Some seek less from his abundance
Others seek more, which he denies

33. Giver of a fleeting world
To one who spurns it, satisfied

34. You give your creation succor
And your elect all they confide

35. I complain to you of yearning
Fires, around my heart they're tied

36. I'm the hunter who still has not found
Water, though each time he's tried

37. Since you left I've tasted death
I had not thought it would betide

38. Buried, though not in Egypt's soil
But deep in the Sa'id's countryside

39. Had I not felt this, I could not have borne
To string a verse, even if I tried

40. For my mind binds my thoughts
While to left and right dullness resides

41. But my dear friend inspires
The tongue-tied fool to waken thoughts inside

42. So I sang lightly, generously
For he was generous, so I vied

43. Every verse I wrote in praise of him
Joined, harmonized, and unified

44. I lodged him in the abodes of glory
Each verse a palace fortified

45. For him, whom God has guided
As he desires, never denied

46. Had fate allowed what I desire
His nearness, I'd be gratified

47. To the Sanctuary I must wind my way
Of glorious grace and kindness magnified
