١. ﻗﻴﻞَ: ﻳﺄﺗﻲ ﻛﻞﱠ ﻳﻮمٍ ﺑﺮﺛﺎء!
وﻳﺤﻬﻢ, ﻻ ﻳﺴﺘﻄﻴﺒﻮن اﻟﻮﻓﺎء

2. I weep for those I have lost, and for
The oft goodbyes still joined to crying.

٢. ﺑﺖﱡ ﻣﻦ ﻓﻘﺪ أَﺧﻼّﺋﻲ، وﻣﻦ
ﻛﺜﺮة اﻟﺘﱠﻮدﻳﻊ ﻣﻮﺻﻮل اﻟﺒﻜﺎء

3. They crossed the bridge to the other side, after
The caravan had gone, and fervor had faded.

٣. ﻋﺒﺮوا الجسر إﻟﻰ اﻷُﺧﺮى، وﻗﺪ
ﺑﻌﺪ اﻟﺮﱠﻛﺐ، وﻗﺪ ﺧﻒﱠ الحداء

4. Among them is a friend of mine,
Or a newborn child, or the soul's darling,

٤. ﻟِﻲَ ﻓﻴﻬﻢْ ﺻﺎﺣﺐ، أو ﻟِﺪةٌ
أو ﺣﺒﻴﺐ اﻟﻨﻔﺲ، أو إِﻟﻒُ اﻟﺼﺒﺎء

5. Or the companion of my youth.
How many visions of them are in my eyes

٥. ﻛﻢ ﺧﻴﺎلٍ ﻟﻬﻢُ ﻓﻲ ﻧﺎﻇﺮي
ﺑﺈزاء اﻟﻠﻴﻞ ﻗﺪ راح وﺟﺎء!

6. With the coming and going of night!
Perhaps I close my eyelids

٦. رﺑﱠﻤﺎ أﻃﺒﻘﺖُ أﺟﻔﺎﻧﻲ ﻟﻜﻲ
أَﻏﻤﺮَ اﻟﻮﻫﻢ، وأَﺳﺘﺒﻘﻲ اﻟﻠﻘﺎء

7. To immerse in reverie and retain reunion.
Stayed has knowledge with grieving Jesus,

٧. ﻗﻌﺪ اﻟﻌﻠﻢ ﺑﻌﻴﺴﻰ ﻣﺄﺗﻤﺎً
واﻟﻴﺮاع اﻟﻌﻒﱡ، واﻟﺼﱠﺪر اﻟﻨﱠﻘﺎء

8. As well as the pure heart and chest.
Best is he who told, traveled, provisioned

٨. ﺧﻴﺮُ ﻣَﻦ ﻗﺎل، وﻣَﻦ ﺟﺎل، وﻣَﻦ
ﻣَﻬَﺪَ اﻟﺮأْي، وآوى، وأﻓﺎء!

9. Opinion, sheltered, protected, and pardoned!
The purified knowledge witnessed he is

٩. ﺷﻬﺪَ اﻟﻌﻠﻢ المزﻛﻰ أﻧﻪ
ِﻣﻦ ﻫﻮىً ﺧِﻠْﻮ،وﻣﻦ ﻟﻐﻮٍ ﺑﺮاء

10. Free of vain passion and empty of guilt.
The succession of eras - when impelled

١٠. سِيَرُ اﻷﺣﻘﺎب لما اﻃﱠﺮدت
ﻓﻲ ﻳﺪﻳﻪ، اﻃﱠﺮدتْ ﻋﺬبَ ﻣﺎء

11. Through his hands - impelled sweet water.
He excelled in transmitting, surpassed in critique,

١١. ﺑَﺮﱠ ﺑﺎﻟﻨﻘﻞ، ﻋﻠﻰ اﻟﻨﻘﺪ ﻟﻪ
وﻧﻔﻰ ﻋﻨﻪ ﺗﻬﺎوﻳﻞ اﻟﺮّﻳﺎء

12. And denied him the vanities of hypocrisy.
The fellow of history is he who - not one glance

١٢. وأَﺧﻮ اﻟﺘﺄْرﻳﺦ: َﻣﻦْ ﻟﻢ ﻳﺄْﻟُﻪ
ﻧﻈﺮةً، أو ﺧﺒﺮةً، ﻻ اﻟﺒَﺒَﻐﺎء!

13. Or experience - escaped, not even the parrots!
Knowledge won approbation

١٣. ﻇﻔﺮَ اﻟﻌﻠﻢ بمعلوفية
ﻣﻦ ﻳﺮاعٍ ﻛﺎﻟﺮﱠﻳﺎحين وﺿﺎء

14. Like the fragrant morning breeze, immaculate.
You knew what effort and hard work were, and did not

١٤. ﻋﻠﻤﺖ ﻣﺎ الجهد, واﻟﺪأْب، وﻟﻢ
ﺗﺪرِ ﻣﺎ اﻟﺪﱠﻋﻮى، وﻻ ﻣﺎ الخيلاء

15. Know what pretense and what arrogance were.
There was no overabundance for bees in his lines

١٥. لم ﻳُﺘَﺢ ﻟﻠﺸّﻬﺪ ﻓﻲ أَﺑﻴﺎﺗﻪ
ﻣﺎ ﺟﻨﻰ اﻟﺘﺄرﻳﺦ ﻣﻦ ذاك اﻟﻌﻨﺎء

16. Of what history harvested of that misery.
Pleasant was the secret of dusk in the love of

١٦. ﻃﺎب ﺳﺮﱡ اﻟﺴﱡﻬﺪ ﻓﻲ ﺣُﺐّ اﻟﺪﺟﻰ
ﺑﺴﻨًﻰ ﻣﻦ ﺳﻬﺪ ﻋﻴﺴﻰ, وﺳﻨﺎء

17. The excellence of Jesus and its brilliance.
What a shining line in his compilation

١٧. ربﱠ ﺳﻄﺮٍ ﻻﻣﻊٍ ﻓﻲ ﻃﺮﺳﻪ
ﺑﺴﻮاد اﻟﻠﻴﻞ, والعين، أَﺿﺎء!

18. In the blackness of night and the eye brought radiance!
Do not mind the color of its darkness

١٨. ﻻ ﺗﺒﺎلِ اﻟﻠﱠﻮن ﻣﻦ أﺳﻮده
ﻓﺎﻟﺪﱠم اﻷَﺣﻤﺮ والحبر ﺳﻮاء

19. For red blood and black ink are equal.

١٩. ﻟﻢ ﻳﻔﺖْ ﻓﻦﱡ ﺑﺪﻳﻌﺎت الحلى
ﺣﺎﺿﻦ اﻟﻔﺼﺤﻰ، وﻗﻄﺐ اﻟﺒﻠﻐﺎءْ

20. Embracing eloquence and pole of rhetoricians.

٢٠. آﺛﺮ اﻟﻌﻄﻞ ﻣﻦ اﻟﻘﻮل لما
ﺧﺎف ﻓﻲ اﻟﺪﻗﱠﺔ ﻣﻦ زﻫﻮ اﻷداء

21. He feared precision in the arrogance of execution.

٢١. ورأى ﻟﻠﺪﱡر ﻓﻲ ﺟﻠﻮﺗﻪ
ﻋﻦ ﻓﻨﻮن اﻟﻨﱠﻘﺶ، واﻟﺮﱠﻗﺶ، ﻏﻨﺎء

22. Above the arts of carving and etching, singing.

٢٢. ﻓﻬﻮ، مما ﺷﻒَّ ﻣﻦ أُﺳﻠﻮﺑﻪ
ﻟﻢ ﻳُﻘِﻢْ ﻣﻌﻨﻰ ﻟﻪ ﻃﻲ الخفاء

23. He did not establish any covert meaning for it.

٢٣. ﻗﺪ أُﺟﺪﱠت ﻟﻲَ ﻣﻨﻪ ﺻﻮرةٌ
وﻫﻮ ﻓﻲ اﻟﻜﺒْﺮة، واﻟﺪﱠاء اﻟﻌﻴﺎء

24. As he was in advanced age and frail health.

٢٤. ﺻﺎﻧﻬﺎ اﻟﺘﱠﺬﻛﺎر ﻣﻦ ﻏﻢ اﻟﻨﻮى
ﻓﻲ أَﺷﻒّ اﻟﻈﻞّ ﻣﻦ أَوﻫﻰ ﻏﺸﺎء

25. In the most compassionate shade from the most fragile veil.
There, two eyes had exerted themselves

٢٥. ﻓﺈذا ﻋﻴﻨﺎن ﻗﺪ أُﺟﻬﺪﺗﺎ
ﻓﻲ اﻟﺜﱠﻤﺎنين، ﺑﺈِلحاح اﻟﺬﱠﻛﺎء

26. In his eighties, with the insistence of intelligence.
And lo, like clouds on their horizons

٢٦. وإذا ﻛﺎﻟﺴﱡﺤﺐ، ﻓﻲ ُأﻓْﻘﻴﻬﻤﺎ
ﺗﻠﺘﻘﻴﻬﺎ وﺛﺒﺎت ﻣﻦ ﺿﻴﺎء

27. Converging, with resolute flashes of brilliance.
You see in his frowning brow as if

٢٧. وﺗﺮى ﻓﻲ الحاﺟﺐ الجثل ﻛﻤﺎ
ﻓﻲ ﺟﻨﺎح اﻟﻄﻴﺮ ﻗﺪ أَﻋﻴﺎ وﻧﺎء

28. In the wing of a bird, tired and bent.
And on his contracted forehead:

٢٨. وﻋﻠﻰ التغضين ﻓﻲ ﺟﺒﻬﺘﻪ:
أَﺛﺮُ اﻟﻜﺪ، وﻟﺬعُ اﻟﺒُﺮَﺣﺎء

29. The trace of struggle and sting of misfortune
Like streams of fire, except what you see

٢٩. ﻛﻤﺠﺎري اﻟﻨﺎر, إﻻ ﻣﺎ ﺗﺮى
ﻣﻦ ﺳﻜﻮنٍ ﻣﺘﺮامٍ, واﻧﻄﻔﺎء

30. Of serene composure and extinguishing.
O father of history: you have conveyed specks

٣٠. ﻳﺎ أَﺑﺎ اﻟﺘﺄْرﻳﺦ: ﺑُﻠّﻐﺖ ذرىً
ﻟﻢ ﺗُﺘﺢْ ﻋﻠﻴﺎؤﻫﺎ ﻟﻠﻨﱡﻈﺮاءْ

31. To which their loftiness was not revealed to peers.
Give us from his news, and see for us:

٣١. ﻫﺎتِ ﻣﻦ أَﻧﺒﺎﺋﻪ، واﻧﻈﺮْ ﻟﻨﺎ:
ﻫﻞ ﻟﻴﺎﻟﻲ اﻟﻐﺪِ ﻣﻦ أَﻣﺲ ﻣﻼء!

32. Are the nights of tomorrow like yesterday, aged?
And are the people in their same ways

٣٢. وﻫﻞ اﻟﻨَّﺎس ﻋﻠﻰ أﻃﻮارﻫﻢ
ﻓﻲ ﺗﻮاﻟﻲ ﺟُﺪُدٍ، أو ﻗﺪﻣﺎء!

33. In the succession of new things and ancient?
Did they worship power yesterday? Have

٣٣. أﻟﱠﻬﻮا اﻟﻘﻮﱠة ﻓﻲ اﻷﻣﺲ, ﻓﻬﻞ
ﺳﺠﺪوا اﻟﻴﻮم ﻟﻐﻴﺮ اﻷﻗﻮﻳﺎء!

34. They prostrated today to other than the powerful?
And has the individual assumed his era

٣٤. وﻫﻞ اﻟﻔﺮد ﺗﻮﻟﻰ ﻋﺼﺮه
واﺳﺘﺬﻟﱠﺘﻪ أُﻟﻮف الجبناء!

35. While thousands of cowards were humiliated?
There was succession by birth and crown. Have

٣٥. ﻛﺎن ﺑﺎلميلاد واﻟﺘَّﺎج, ﻓﻬﻞ
ﻋﺎد ﻓﻴﻬﻢ ﺑﺮﻋﺎعٍ, وﻏﺜﺎء!

36. Among them rabble and riffraff returned?
Did he make the council groups? Have

٣٦. ﺟﻌﻞ اﻟﺸﱡﻮرى ﺟﻤﺎﻋﺎت، ﻓﻬﻞ
ﻫﻢ ﺷﺎؤوا ﻣﺮّ ًة، أم ﻫﻮ ﺷﺎء!

37. They desired once, or did he desire?
And has knowledge revealed its harm

٣٧. وﻫﻞ اﻟﻌﻠﻢ تجلَّى ﺑﺄْﺳﻪ
ﻓﻲ اﺟﺘﻼب الخير, أو ﺳَﻮقِ اﻟﺮﺧﺎء

38. In obtaining good, or leading prosperity?
Or has an oppressive hand taken it over,

٣٨. أم ﺗﻮﻟﱠﺘﻪ ﻳﺪا ﻃﺎﻏﻴﺔٍ
ﺳﺨﱠﺮ اﻟﻌﻠﻢ ﻟﺸﺮٍّ, وﺷﻘﺎء

39. Employed knowledge for evil and misery?
In investigating the innovations of murder for it,

٣٩. ﻓﻲ ﺗﻘﺼّﻲ ﺑﺪع اﻟﻔﺘﻚ ﻟﻪ
ﻋﺎد أَﺿﺮى اﻟﻮﺣﺶ أَﺗﻘﻰ اﻟﻌﻠﻤﺎء!

40. Have the wisest of scholars returned most vicious of beasts?

٤٠. وﻫﻞ الحقﱡ ﺷﻄﻴﺐ ﺳﻴﻔﻪ،
أم ﻧَﺒَﺖْ ﻋﻨﻪ براهين المضاء!

41. And has truth sharpened its sword,
Or have proofs of illumination sprouted from it?

٤١. وﻫﻞ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﺔُ ﻃﺒﻊ، أم ﺗﺮى
أﻧﻬﺎ ﺑﻌﺾُ دﻋﺎوى اﻟﻀﻌﻔﺎء!

42. And is mercy a temperament? Or do you see
That it is some claim of the weak?

٤٢. وﻫﻞ المال ﻫﻮىً ﻣﺴﺘﻬﺰل
أم ﻫﻮ اﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ، ووﻳﺢ اﻟﻔﻘﺮاء

43. And has money been a frivolous infatuation
Or is it worldliness - and woe to the destitute?

٤٣. ﻳﺎ أﺑﺎ ﻓﻮزي, وَأﻗﻤﺎر اﻟﺪﱡﺟﻰ:
ﻛﻞﱡ نجمٍ ﻟﻚ ﻗﺪ زان اﻟﺴﻤﺎءْ

44. O Abu Fawzi and moons of dusk -
Has every star adorned the sky for you?

٤٤. ﻧﺰل اﻟﺒﺪر ﻟﻬﻢ ﻋﻦ أَوْﺟِﻪ
وﺗﻨﺤﱠﻰ ﻟﺒﺪور اﻟﺸﱡﻌﺮاء!!

45. Has the moon descended from its apex for them
And stepped aside for the full moons of poets?

٤٥. أﺗُﺮى ﺗﺬﻛﺮ ﻟﻲ ﺷﻌﺮًا ﺟﺮى
ﻳﻮم ﻓﻮزي ﺑﺪﻣﻮعٍ، ودﻣﺎء

46. Do you remember he recited poetry
The day Fawzi with tears and blood?

٤٦. رﺣﺖ أﺑﻜﻴﻪ أﺧًﺎ، ﺑﻞ ﺷﺎﻋﺮاً،
ﺑﻞ ﺳﻨﺎء اﻟﻨﱠﺠﻢ، ﺑﻞ ﺧﻔﻖَ اﻟﻠّﻮاء

47. I wept him as a brother, but also a poet,
And brilliance of a star, and fluttering of a flag.

٤٧. ﻛﻞﱡ ﻳﻮم, ﺑﻌﺪ أﻳﺎﻣﻲ ﺑﻪ
ﻟﺰﻣﺎن اﻟﻄﻴﺐ واﻟﻨﱠﻔﺢ ﻓﺪاء!

48. Each day after my days through him
Is ransom for the good age and fine scent!

٤٨. ﻧﺤﻦ ﻛﻨﺎ ﻏُﺼُﻨﻲ وادي اﻟﺼﺒﺎ .
وﻫﺰارَيْ رﺑﻮة اﻷرض اﻟﻔﻀﺎء

49. We were two branches of the valley of youth.
And its jesters on the plateau of bare earth.

٤٩. ﻟﻲ ﺟﻨﺎح، وﻟﻪ اﻟﻌﺎﻟﻲ اﻟﺬي
ﺳﺤﺐ اﻟﻈﻞﱠ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻛﻞ ﻋﻼء

50. I have a wing, and he has the lofty one
Which drew shade over every summit.

٥٠. ﺑﻌﺪ أﺳﺠﺎع اﻟﻬﻮى ﻣﻦ ﺷﺪوه
ﻣﺎ زﻫﺎ ﻟﻴﻠﻰ, وﻻ ﻗﻴﺴًﺎ ﻏﻨﺎء

51. After the rhythms of passion from his chanting
Zuhaa did not live, nor Qais singing.

٥١. أﻳﱡﻬﺎ اﻟﻨﱠﺎزل ﺑﺎلخلد اﻟﻌُﻼ:
ﻗﺪ أﺗﻴﺖَ اﻟﺴﺎبقين اﻟﻨﱡﺒﻐﺎءْ

52. O you who descended to eternity sublime -
You have come upon the foremost brilliant ones.

٥٢. وﺗﻤﻠﻴﺖ ﻧﺴﻴﻤًﺎ ﻃﺎﻫﺮًا
وﺣﺪﻳﺜًﺎ ﻟﻴﻦ الجرس، رﺧﺎء

53. And you have dictated a pure breeze
And soft conversation, comfort.

٥٣. اﺳﺘﺮﺣﺖ، اﻟﻴﻮم، ﻓﻲ ﻣﺠﻠﺴﻬﻢ
ﻣﻦ َأﺧﻲ ﻟﻐﻮٍ, وﻣﻦ ذي ﻏُﻠَﻮاء

54. Today you have rested in their council
From my vain brother and one of pretense.

٥٤. لا الحسود المتلظى ﺻﺪرُهُ
ﺷﺎﺧﺺُ العين وﻻ ﺧﻞٌّ أَﺳﺎء

55. Not the jealous one, whose chest tightens,
Squinting and evil of tongue.

٥٥. أﻧﺖَ ﻓﻲ الصّدق ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻘﻌﺪه،
ﻓﺘﻬﻨﱠﺄْ، واﺗﱠﻜﺊْ أﺷﻬﻰ اﺗﻜﺎء
