1. My heart's religion, lightning illuminates
Upon the horizons of Najd, a pasture for your eye when dry

2. As beautiful as an arm
In which lies a tender heart

3. As if it were Upper Fire
Kindling for the guests

4. Or bright flashes I see
While the night is intensely dark

5. With his hands fanning
Coals leaning over the hearth

6. Or a sheltering mother bending
Over the wet firewood

7. Manliness, intellect, and nobility in him
With the twittering of ostriches

8. He startles the flock
With flashes like those that cracked through

9. The thickness of dark clouds
Do you not see lightning appear

10. Except to your vanishing west
And the sigh has confusion

11. Between the ribs, it wafts
Illuminating with kindness a grave

12. In which lies the dearest beloved
In it is water from the eye

13. No, but from the heart, anguish
I never imagined one day

14. While fate strikes and strikes
That I would spend the night with

15. Vast desert between you and I
And that doubts would chase

16. What is between us, misfortunes strike
To the point that a pool drinks

17. From the locust trees and ponds
And how can a horse bolting in fright

18. Stop to graze
O home of my people, where are

19. Those first dwelling your abode
Calamities destroyed them

20. The hands of fate covered them
It drives them to the graves

21. A grieving driver
Burying them in the earth whether

22. They moan or become dust
When they unsheathe swords

23. They answer the warrior’s call
And when the gazelles

24. Flee from the abode, they vanish
Homes in which there was

25. For the people safety and fear
In them the spearheads were whet

26. And the steadfast mount saddled
Opinion disappears for caution’s sake

27. But the achiever does not disappear
The most unbending of us is led

28. Every day
The origin and leaves of

29. Palm trees are uprooted and the stump erased
No people’s enemy remains

30. Nor the adviser, the loving one
The same in the den of destruction and poverty

31. Fate runs its course, the doctor and the healed one
Where is safety when

32. For the hyenas is plunder and pulling
And in return for protecting them

33. A miserly inadequate compensation
The peace of nights betrays

34. And peace with them is war
For us there is lying in wait from fate

35. For a promise and then a pounce
One day deceit, another day

36. An enemy against us and rebellion
Veering towards straits though

37. The path is difficult
Is this playfulness or seriousness

38. At the end? Or the end of seriousness is play?
My sister, troubles indeed

39. Have befallen you, troubles
And misery has afflicted me

40. Being far from you is difficult
An arrow has struck you from it

41. Fate’s highest point and west
Its blade nor piercing

42. One day, nor its fletching frail
After you it spends the night in my bed

43. Agony and worries
Like a gazelle after separation

44. From companions, most wary
How can the soul be reassured

45. From the heat of grief and calamity
If the days had turned back

46. From you the swift deaths, stab and strike
A fierce warrior would have plunged in them

47. And the fists of might stood up to calamity
And on the heights

48. Wolves of a dark night carried
You met an end that led to

49. Glory even after it
And you had nothing

50. Except what was fated
And behind every veil

51. Of chastity, barriers
And your grave is protection from

52. Dust enveloping you before
As if I, each day

53. Pour my heart out to you
And whenever the wound heals

54. My heart returns to lament
My gaze turns from

55. All others and wanders
I avoid your grave lest

56. I say, may it be watered by rain
Or say, may it be irrigated

57. By clouds bearing water
Except for the need of a soul

58. That yearns and aspires for you
Or so that worries be dispelled

59. If dripping onto your grave they are drunk
And how can a grave be thirsty

60. In which lies the sweet nectar
Or how can earth be dark

61. In which stars have shone
Its glory, not the darkness

62. Of the tomb and wasteland
You dwelled alongside a neighbor receiving

63. From Him affection and love
A people who tomorrow are

64. For God and the angels a people
O a slumber then from it

65. To the gardens brought
If someone is distant

66. Then attachments are near
I dislike it but

67. Visiting is dislike to me
If an eye forgets you

68. Then a heart has certainly filled from you
And if you are a stranger then

69. For your seekers east and west
To lack you is blame and blame

70. Upon the days regarding you and plunder
And after my day

71. Blame for fate continues from me
So how many nights have I spent and

72. For the fate-holder blame lies with me
