I love you with a nature far from pretense

1. I love you with a nature far from pretense
And I think highly of you with a mind free of madness

2. So you are my friend if I go towards passion
And you are my enemy if I return to reason

3. And the two are the same to me, one who urges me to fervor
That tortures my heart, or one who urges me to gain

4. For love is nothing but humiliation and submission
To a master whom I see honored while I'm disgraced

5. And if I were given a choice of who to give passion to
I would not choose to love a passion with my reason still with me

6. Yet there is no choice in love for the young man
To know one day what will pass and what will remain

7. And if there was choice in passion, hearts would have shortened
What they stingily gave to the beloved

8. And the young man does not know how to bargain
With an unfair creditor who never tires of demanding
