1. The breeze blew over grape saplings.
Fill me with hopes and dreams every moment.

2. O breeze that stirred longing in my heart,
Reminding of whispers from the humming vine branch.

3. The night wraps it during its dark moments.
And drops touch tips of date clusters.

4. As though wandering lost through vineyards,
A glance repeated by sleepy eyelids.

5. If only the loved ones allured the winds to us,
Though we were far and separated.

6. If only despite despair of meeting they
Justified to fervent souls the promised tryst.

7. I refused though the night spread its robes.
Passion hunted me, all resolved and ready.

8. Yearning for you and caring for you while
Tears flow between what's loosened and knotted.

9. Not really a stranger whom homelands spurned,
The stranger's close, never to be rejected.

10. O vine bird, never estranged from a home,
Nor from shelter shut out and deported.

11. In shade of vines, sprawling and pendant,
That fondle and indulge you, clusters beckon.

12. Your nest you filled with taste, none pilfered,
With no watcher, save many a vine shoot.

13. You cry though no intimate have you lost,
Nor from afar one promised and awaited.

14. You've suffered no injustice from my love,
For one who's sick, his heart keeps turning over.

15. I who if I weep with passion have the right,
So many 'twixt sobbing and singing are divided.

16. Seclusions that drew away their affection
From me, while I held back, respecting the dates.

17. My firm complaint to fate does not forget,
Though tied by ropes of weakness and knotted fast.

18. If cares lean his way as slumber descends,
Dawn's revelations break before first planet.

19. I say to wishes, between them and me, farewell,
Nothing between but endless desert sands.

20. My tears are riders forever traveling,
Whips cracking on sturdy camels' necks.

21. I gave them drops of sorrow for provisions,
As the march pelts them with blow after blow.

22. And for pursuers in our tracks imprecations,
Charging on steeds, long lines of warriors.

23. They cut lives' threads for no reason,
While noble deeds and glories lie forgotten.

24. When their resolves are firm they abandon
A world that mocks the ignorant and foolish.

25. No shame in poverty when all is revealed,
Shame only in wealth that is thankless.

26. You meet their palms in every tribulation
Twisted in strength's ropes and generosity.

27. If their loud crier calls amidst the fray, they charge
At early risers with blades bare and bloodied.

28. How many a foe their spears transfixed
Then called the bare ground for help in panic.

29. Their spirits always lofty since early days
No lowliness attains such towering heights.

30. When their zeal glows hot as ember
Their minds sparkle bright as the full moon.

31. And when setbacks flow their calm hearts
Take and scatter the souls of the valiant.

32. Son of Husayn, no lies make my kinship claim
If I include you among the brilliant stars.

33. No foeman who attacked could outpace
As horses trampled the loud confusion.

34. They are too accustomed, since those olden days,
To heights no feeble aspirant can scale.

35. They refuse darkness to wear its gown and veil
A moment, without tormenting a sleeping eye.

36. Angered when you grant them paltry wishes
Unreasonable, not firmly decided.

37. They are guests of a land no people inhabit,
With no companion or watering place.

38. So you are most generous when they extend
Hands whether for threats or promise.

39. Now Success’ steeds come galloping,
Ushering in a day of glowing visage and grace.

40. For a birth whose jewel our fathers polished
Till Glory wreathed necks with circlets in place.

41. A birth whose splendor deprived dawn of all allure
As it kissed its robe in envy, pleasure erased.

42. It was a star that cloaked darkness in its light
Though night donned its blackest clothes.

43. A night whose tales it pleats across its breast
In day of slender frame and tender waist.

44. Allah’s sun brought a gem that outshone the moon
In its glory, secure and fortune graced.

45. You were no more than a drop that traced its path
To hopes, as sap inside wood flows apace.

46. You unfurled from it a veil in empty space
With misfortunes wrapping tyrants in its lace.

47. Noble one from whom apt glories emanate
Like the flow of lightning flashes in their pace.

48. Never you accepted fate’s gifts with favor
Until it favored you with gift not withdrawn.

49. Gave you treasure from the potter it would spend
On other offspring, scattered afar disgraced.

50. Wounding the warrior’s prideful soul, obstructing,
And delighting the doting lover’s heart effaced.

51. You dispelled the enemies, their consciences
Bleeding from the stroke of glory without cease.

52. Still you rule though events show disdain
Clasping the branch of dreams though undebased.

53. Days for you shine radiant, entertaining,
As each sunrise grows more celebratory.

54. O you who liberate hearing though hearing stays
A captive in the grasp of blaming critics.

55. Many occasions have prohibited you
From the good you were denied and displaced.

56. Still hoping for days’ kindness, every
New birth but replaces the last, debased.
