1. Have you not seen how fate's events transpire?
Should you not then think ill of life's tenure?

2. While the youth stood like a towering mountain,
Surrounded by his strong men with weapons glittering,

3. Refusing baseness among his tribe,
Vying in glory and pride,

4. Whenever he summoned his tribes,
They gathered to him eagerly in throngs,

5. Charging upon the spears as though they were
A torrent raging and a stream flowing,

6. If they were forbidden, they were more obstinate
As though called to dispersed places.

7. When numbered like the stars if called upon,
They crowded together like hair disheveled.

8. They girded their loins for death itself
The offspring of heroes, of goodly stock.

9. Time slipped by the tread of his heel
And the terrains of time over obstacles trip.

10. He took away coyness which was his mantle
And approved readily of being small.

11. The notice of fate reminded of its disunion
As the bivalve is joined together by mucilage.

12. He dragged his steeds over the plain and sped
Aiming while the level land is cracked by ruggedness.

13. Until his sword's scabbard in the depths
Of a disconnected sea met the sun.

14. Then the hand of death snatched him
As dry wood is seized by the fang and claw.

15. The spears did not ward him off,
Nor did his wealth turn the ordained away.

16. He gathered soldiers behind him so it was as though
Misfortune met him while his back vulnerable.

17. He built fortresses luxuriously but it was as though
He spent the night not knowing it was a waste.

18. And he aimed the catapults against the foe
As though it was for his pigeons he aimed.

19. This was Ubaydullah when he threw
Honor’s bait and refused time’s captivity.

20. And his aspiration tossed him into fate’s calamity
So he trod the necks of the bright stars.

21. His achievements surpassed
The stars in their settings starting with the full moon.

22. The enemies warned each other of his assault
But the bravest of them refused to panic.

23. His attacking band led death but could not
Prevent the striking of its white forelock.

24. His swords recoiled and his soldiers
Fearfully recoiled at that matter.

25. He had been famous whenever the battle
Was mentioned and the stands of patience.

26. Exulting in every calamity
That makes the poles the place of mortals.

27. He rose to the farthest extent of glory
Unrestricted by the hindrances of greatness.

28. Had he not been opposed by destiny
He would have continued his aggressiveness.

29. His achievements caused his destruction
Yet of men his remembrance is immortalized.

30. The nights after his death consumed
The fire of encampments and the saddles.

31. My father's cousin is gone and has robbed
Misfortunes from me of the finest treasure.

32. He had been one of my number when
Adversity whose ordeal straitened the breast struck.

33. Yet time in its vicissitudes
Intends disloyalty with the intention of righteousness.

34. How many silent sighs
Clinging to the fetters of reward!

35. In their silence they harbored against you
In their interiors embers of coal.

36. Had what turned away from you been a hand
That warded you from the deadly immolation -

37. I would have stood between you two to turn aside
Its arrow from your exposed neck to my neck.

38. And had it been a brown calamity unleashed
I would have offered it my chest to pierce.

39. And I would have been lavish with my life for your sake
Out of my delight in bounty and nobility.

40. Or seeking by my soul an excuse,
As one strives between success and excuse.

41. But the firmest archeress shot you
An arrow and guided it to the mortal spot.

42. It reached you from behind the armor and
Between the gaps of the spear and the swirling dust.

43. The clouds carried the new-washed wounds
And watered the hidden grave.

44. Had my tears not shared in watering it
Scarce upon it would the dew drops fall.

45. If the soil of men produced according to
The extent of highness and brilliance of worth,

46. It would have grown from his valor
Those date palms with the reddish-brown spearwood.

47. Seeking safety is excessive of preventing fate
So let ordainment lead or run its course!

48. If fear of the two death knells
Inclined them to death, they would not vie in glory.

49. Or reckoned what the resolve contains when
They bid farewell forever in haste.

50. We protect food for survival while
The one of fixed terms, their interiors flow.

51. If preserving the self could avail us
The healer would be most deserving of life.

52. Death is a malady with no remedy for it,
The perishing and the surviving are equal.
