1. Many scorn me though gentle among men,
Stooping to wrong while erecting snares for me.

2. Others court greedy hopes, while for them
I spent my wealth to purchase their honor.

3. Thus cheapened, my honor’s a bargain for me.
No blame to the poor man, content though he be.

4. Blame riches that ever breed avarice.
My clothes hint of glory, no shred left behind.

5. See them trail shreds while my belly lacks meals,
My neck bears events with care and endeavor.

6. Perchance the keen falcon may fold its wings.
The valiant turns to the fight, shunning disgrace,

7. Whenever harmed, shows patience that days
May relive, for time is but winding and crooked.

8. By the bright Pleiades that led them headlong
To destruction, some duped and others rash.

9. Hunger mounts from the paunch, when effort is lacking,
And provisions are distant and hard to obtain.

10. Their purpose devoured by fate and misfortunes,
Only blame and regrets for them remain.

11. I made not disgrace my lasting abode,
From wrong my recourse, and safely I hide.

12. Gone from my shoulder's hope, yet I wonder-
How often men hope while in direst need!

13. If favor of kings is fortune for dreamers,
Vain is my dream, and hoping brings naught worth the while.
