1. I'm jealous of the winds caressing you,
And ask about your meadows and shelters.

2. I greet you loudly though my voice is muted,
Impenetrable, it cannot scream.

3. I wish the brave would mingle with you,
And the valiant glitter on your hillsides.

4. How often have I journeyed towards your land,
Pushing the morning into afternoon.

5. This life has humbled my glory,
And stripped my splendor and pride.

6. Once blame would circle around me,
With the reins pulled towards ambition.

7. Events now happen as I intend,
And time grants me my wishes.

8. The lofty summits and valleys
Clash on the peaks and in the hollows.

9. When the dark nights questioned my secrets,
I confronted them at dawn’s break.

10. And for the armored man whose food I hoarded,
The spears were ready for the charge.

11. With a glance that peeks from the eyrie,
The glance of one sipping from a goblet.

12. And another in the ribs with a murmur,
The murmur of a stallion brought to mate.

Why do foes seek to fight me,

14. When my flank is open to wounds?
An old man, yet you want to wrong me,

15. With what hand can you curb my aspirations?

16. I attained my father in nobility,
And lineage in courage and generosity.

17. While you only attained your father,
As a fox attains a wing.

You were nurtured in insolence towards kin,

19. As barking is nurtured into howling.
Thus we see your place compared to Nizār’s,

20. Is like the place of sickness in perfect health.
Sons of Matar left the sublime,

21. So every wretched fool gazed upon it.
And avoided contending with death,

22. And the violent thrusts of spears.
Does the defect of your origin hide,

23. When your snouts grow on wounds?
The tribes reproach us for severing

24. Ties with ʿĀmir and Bani Riyaḥ.
And pinned our hopes on a rope,

25. That hearts hang upon without relief.
Yet they all drag glory,

26. To preserve the grass of meadows.
Convey to the living masters that we,

27. Have found pleasure in clashing goblets.
And have tired of haunting the lowlands,

28. And of revels and easy delights.
Iraq’s domes shade us,

29. We screen them with spearheads.
We are shaded in the valleys,

30. And fanned by the winds.
Neighbors of the Caliph, where

31. Men’s virtues rise in aspiration.
We guide immaculate praise to him,

32. And graze in his lawful property.
Freely giving hands rewards,

33. Serious yet playful in manner.
When he takes the initiative attack,

34. He goes smoothly by ambition’s paths.
Commander of the Faithful, my travel

35. On this paved road has been humbled.
How often has my steed plunged into the sea,

36. To you cresting with goats and hillsides.

37. A mirage like a meadow floating in it,
Are maidens like the hump of loaded camels.

38. How you aspire to glory,
And dream of wishes and comfort.

39. And days when death harries you,
Glowering from all sides.

40. When the brave trembles because of them, we say
To a affair choked with bloodshed.
