1. In every day a resting place for loved ones
And on homes for tears an outpouring

2. Yearning for the homes from afar overcoming
And ardor throughout prolonged separation cheering

3. Daughters of patience deserted you though oft
Their motives fell short of your spirit aspiring

4. O days, after long leadership, does a heart
Obeying leadership, pliant, still deny?

5. And the she-camel, whenever the watcher
Slumbers, bounds and ranges unfettered

6. Furtive glances stole upon us though, like
The cattle's lowing toward a glimmer glimpsed

7. Smiling through the clouds' chill, his smile
A glistening shower by drinking is refreshed

8. You tasked your eye with a measured glance
Though joy in it tears pouring preempted

9. As though partridges spending the night
Fluttered off domes twittering

10. They ruled without merit and fled without
Justice, sang without taste, were graceless in triumph

11. Say to the nights: you've ruled long so lament
While graciousness to others is more proper

12. Of what grievance in your grievances complain I?
And of what sin in your sins pardon I?

13. If I doubt your acts due to loss of loved ones
Then for your acts no excuse in blaming me worse

14. A light glimmered in my gloom but neither
Illumined am I nor by it refreshed

15. I sold youth for a price: that never profits
The wise man's sale for it no earnings reaps

16. Strange not the days' caprice for time's unstable
And what's between kin causes pain more crushing

17. When noblewomen aim their arrows at you
Then kith and kin's shafts are wounds more gashing

18. Don the raiment of humiliation if you must
Writhing while your heart overflows with anguish

19. Still expecting outcomes, you mustn't
Make wickedness your ally or tranquility seek

20. Your bed is unyielding hatred and your friend
Is chronic falsehood clinging without relief

21. Know that the house, however settled in,
Is a prison and prolonged grief fetters chafing

22. O, would that my soft pliant sword for you
Be molded, keen edge readily unsheathed

23. But nay, you spurned while made of embers
A wonder: an ember that kindles not its blaze

24. Be a thorn whose diminishing twigs fatigue
Or a sourness that makes the sweet turn brackish

25. From wealth release your hands, for how many
Without riches, the miser did righteous works

26. To his heir remain his wealth's generous deeds
Though poverty he patches and mends

27. Some gain tithes through toil while others
Homes of nobility their bounty reap

28. No excuse but that hordes I descry
Locusts swarming, the meadows boil over

29. The kites circle, mobbing the `Ajaj's ranks
In the air like clouds' swirling churning darkness

A folk foremost whose names prosperity promised

31. That time would not for their equals make way
They roamed the land's expanse before its verdure

32. Stretched and lounged and yawned in its breadth
With the stab's tip they tore the heights' sleeves

33. The tribes' sturdy trunks, long established
If shamed they were not ignorant; when judging they

34. Judged not rightly; lording it, they vaunted not
My crime to the sly hypocrites is that I am not

35. Cataract-eyed or ugly or pockmarked
They call me bleary-eyed for I

36. Ambitiously rose as dawn breaks
By my tall stature which they could not match

37. And West I claimed that they could not claim
From every bigot, hatred does not wane

38. Whose malice is concealed, not made clear
With morning his enmity's fetters weakened

39. Retreating, yet his wounds still festering
Smooth lain are the cheeks of the lovely ladies

40. And without gain, honor's wounds they gained

44. The ignorant's brows were smoothed, though not
Through merit, were the fetters of slavery loosed

45. Had they an eye of good will instead of enmity
They'd approve what they considered ugly
