1. The night emerged, cloaked
In its heavy, dark garments.
١. طَلَعَت وَاللَيلُ مُشتَمِلٌ
سابِغُ الأَذيالِ وَالأُزُرِ
2. The happy cockerel heralded
From its perch.
٢. مِن خَصاصاتِ الغَبيطِ وَقَد
غَرَّدَ الحادي عَلى أُقُرِ
3. The people's necks slanted
From the remains of a night of wakefulness.
٣. وَرِقابُ القَومِ مايِلَةٌ
مِن بَقايا نَشوَةِ السَهَرِ
4. So they straightened upon their mounts
And followed the light with their gaze.
٤. فَاِستَقاموا في رِحالِهِمُ
يُتبِعونَ الضَوءَ بِالنَظَرِ
5. We continued on, and I said to them:
This is not the rising of the moon.
٥. فَاِمتَرَينا ثُمَّ قُلتُ لَهُم
لَيسَ هَذا مَطلِعُ القَمَرِ
