1. My neighbors have returned my days of grief to me
At Mina

١. أَعادَ لي عيدَ الضَنى
جيرانُنا عَلى مِنى

2. With situations that change this gray-haired one
To a young man, happy again

٢. مَواقِفٌ تُبَدِّلُ ذا الشَي
بِ شِطاطاً بِحِنى

3. Those who saw them say
Those gazelles with the kohl around their eyes

٣. يَقولُ مَن عايَنَ ها
تيكَ الطُلى وَالأَعيُنا

4. This is a gazelle who has given up
And that is a wild cow who has cried out

٤. هَذا غَزالٌ قَد عَطا
وَذاكَ ظَبيٌ قَد رَنا

5. Passionate with desire
For youth and song

٥. وا لَهفَتا مِن واجِدٍ
عَلى الشَبابِ وَالغِنى

6. For them the jealous would accept
To live in the deserts as a homeland

٦. مِن أَجلِها يَرضى الغَري
بُ بِالبَوادي وَطَنا

7. I forget their bent spears
Smooth-sided lances

٧. أَنسى قَنا مُرّانِها
مَوارِنٌ ذاتُ قَنا

8. With which horsemen charge
Not fearing cowardice

٨. يُلقى بِها فَوارِسٌ
لا يَحفِلونَ الجُبَنا

9. Crowded together, they left off
Throwing pebbles, subdued

٩. مُجتَمِراتٌ رُحنَ عَن
رَميِ الجِمارِ مَوهِنا

10. The flock takes comfort from the pond
When night approaches

١٠. تَرَوُّحَ السِربِ عَنِ ال
وِردِ إِذا اللَيلُ دَنا

11. How many despairing livers
For the childless bodies

١١. كَم كَبِدٍ مَعقورَةٍ
لِلعاقِرينَ البُدُنا

12. With eyes that have left them
Eyes on hearts

١٢. بِأَعيُنٍ تَرَكتُها
عَلى القُلوبِ أَعيُنا

13. But they have only made them
To refute a saying of tongues

١٣. وَإِنَّما جَعَلنَها
لِرَدِّ قَولٍ أَلسُنا

14. From them pebbles burst into leaf
Almost bursting out

١٤. يورِقُ مِنهُنَّ الحَصى
حَتّى يَكادُ يُجتَنى

15. Woe to him not infatuated
We have certainly met temptation

١٥. لِيَهُن مَن لَم يَفتَتِن
إِنّا لَقينا الفِتَنا

16. He hides the confusion of passion
Though it loosened what was tied

١٦. يُخفي تَباريحَ الهَوى
وَقَد عَنانا ما عَنا

17. How much pulling away with you
And contention with us

١٧. كَميا النُزوعُ عِندَكُم
كَذا النِزاعُ عِندَنا

18. My two companions stop
Asking me for protection

١٨. يا صاحِبَي رَحلي قِفا
فَسائِلا لي الدِمَنا

19. The rain has changed it
To the direction of the clouds, drenching

١٩. بِالغَمرِ قَد غَيَّرَها
صَوبُ الغَمامِ مُدجِنا

20. And rain down your tears
On that right-hand sand dune

٢٠. وَأَمطِرا دَمعَيكُما
ذاكَ الكَثيبَ الأَيمَنا

21. The house is a dwelling for me
When I lack any dwelling

٢١. الدارُ عِندي سَكَنٌ
إِذا عَدِمتُ السَكَنا

22. They said: and from where
Did longing hit you like an arrow?

٢٢. قالا وَمِن أَينَ رَما
كَ الشَوقُ قُلتُ مِن هُنا

23. I said: from here
And a friend I awakened

٢٣. وَصاحِبٍ نَبَّهتُهُ
بَعدَ اللَغوبِ وَالوَنى

24. After inattention and love
He flung denial in my hearing

٢٤. رَمى الكَرى في سَمعِهِ
فَبَعدَ لَأيٍ أَذِنا

25. So stay far from any ear
And he got up like erect Sakhb

٢٥. وَقامَ كَالمُصعَبِ ذي ال
رَوقِ يَجُرُّ الرَسَنا

26. Dragging spear and step
So I said: who has pledged

٢٦. فَقُلتُ مَن مُعاقِدي
عَلى الرَدى قالَ أَنا

27. To reject me? He said: I
Fear me, even if the channels fear not

٢٧. اِتَّقِ ما بي تَتَقّي
وَلَو أَنابيبَ القَنا

28. All the gazelles are wild
And few of them are to be had

٢٨. كُلُّ الظُبى حَدائِدٌ
وَقَلَّ مِنها المُقتَنى

29. Preservation is only
According to fate and wealth

٢٩. وَإِنَّما الصَونُ عَلى
قَدرِ المَضاءِ وَالغِنا

30. Flashing, I think it
Greenest softness and tenderness

٣٠. وَبارِقٍ أَشيمُهُ
كَالطَرفِ أَغضى وَرَنا

31. Or a spear with interwoven necks
Like candles, show us

٣١. أَو رُمحِ مَحبوكِ القَرا
باتِ شَموعاً أَرِنا

32. I awakened a companion there
Of towering gray hair

٣٢. أَيقَظتُ عَنُه صاحِباً
يَنجابُ عُلوِيَّ السَنا

33. And said: look
Have you not finished your evening yet?

٣٣. فَقُلتُ إِيهِ نَظَراً
أَما قَضَيتَ الوَسَنا

34. Where are you headed?
He said to me: Below the water-skin

٣٤. أَينَ تَقولُ صَوبُهُ
فَقالَ لي دونَ قَنى

35. It reminded me of loved ones and
Remembrance that stirs up grief

٣٥. ذَكَّرَني الأَحبابَ وَال
ذِكرى تَهيجُ الحَزَنا

36. Bosoms that do not console
A heart pining with longing

٣٦. أَضامِنٌ أَن لا يَني
يَشوقُ قَلباً ضَمِنا

37. From the belly of a bitter saddle
And travel that Usfan shelters us

٣٧. مِن بَطنِ مُرٍّ وَالسُرى
تَؤُمُّ عُسفانَ بِنا

38. And Iraq and a land
Oh distance with nothing visible to us

٣٨. وَبِالعِراقِ وَطَري
يا بُعدَ ما لاحَ لَنا

39. I yearn for them while a cooking pot
Boils between us

٣٩. أَشتاقُهُم وَمُربِخٌ
إِلى زَرودٍ بَينَنا

40. Oh woe is me from my passion
Have I not wearied of passion?

٤٠. يا وَيحَ لي مِن شَجَني
أَما مَلَلتُ الشَجَنا

41. It has moved me from my homeland
I have condemned the homeland

٤١. رَحَّلَني عَن وَطَني
إِنّي ذَمَمتُ الوَطَنا

42. Nothing has suited me from my remoteness
Nothing has suited me from life

٤٢. ما رابَني مِن أَبعَدي
ما رابَني مِنَ الدُنى

43. If I found a patched garment
I would wear my cloth for a while

٤٣. وَلَو وَجَدتُ مَرقَعاً
لَبِستُ ثَوبي زَمَنا

44. Where, and who can overcome
With patches, a worn-out hide?

٤٤. أَنّى وَمَن يَغلِبُ بِال
رَقعِ أَديماً لَخِنا

45. I swore by the pillar
With high columns and buildings

٤٥. أَقسَمتُ بِالمَحجوجِ مَر
فوعِ العِمادِ وَالبُنى

46. Like the mast of a tent they
Have propped it up with poles

٤٦. مِثلِ سَنامِ العَودِ قَد
عالوا عَليهِ الظُعُنا

47. Laid out, its breadth
Takes up the place of the mounted knight

٤٧. مَوضوعَةً صِفاحُهُ
وَضعَ المَطِيِّ الثَفِنا

48. And the blackened much-handled one
They have supported its corners

٤٨. وَالأَسوَدُ المَلموسُ قَد
جابوا عَليهِ الرُكُنا

49. Mudar throws on it
After pure Yaman

٤٩. يَلقى عَليهِ مُضَرٌ
بَعدَ الصَفاءِ اليَمَنا

50. You scratch mangy scab
From the itch of poverty

٥٠. تَحَكُّكَ الجُربِ عَلى ال
أَجذالِ مِن مَضِّ الهَنا

51. I would go to a group
Of tall, ugly-faced women

٥١. لَأَقبِلَنَّ مَعشَراً
تِلكَ الطَوالَ اللُدُنا

52. Licking dry gums, they came to us
With tongues smeared

٥٢. تَلَمُّظَ الأَصلالِ لَج
لَجنَ إِلَينا الأَلسُنا

53. Seeking my promise of a drink
Either rejection or death

٥٣. يَطلُبنَ وِردي ظَمَإٍ
إِمّا الرَدى أَو المُنى

54. In their corners
People find poverty and wealth

٥٤. يُصبِحُ في أَطرافِها
لِلقَومِ فَقرٌ وَغِنى

55. Indeed, I have despaired of bearing
Grief with them; indeed, I have despaired

٥٥. لَقَد أَنى أَن أَحمِلَ ال
ضَيمَ بِها لَقَد أَنى
