1. Karbala, you remain a tribulation and affliction,
What the family of Mustafa faced at your place!

2. How much blood was shed on your soil
When they were killed, and how many tears flowed!

3. How the horses wipe their tears with their tails
On the cheeks of the killed, in the darkness of night!

4. They wipe the dust over their brisk legs
From the blood of slit throats and deadly blows!

5. They were guests in the open, barren desert,
Who descended on it, not near any towns.

6. They did not taste water till they all gathered
Around the sharp sword for the fated decree.

7. They eclipse suns with their lights,
Which cannot be matched in brilliance and loftiness.

8. The beasts feast on their bodies,
The forelegs of the racers and the hands of the generous.

9. Their faces like lamps, so a moon has set
And stars have fallen from their high places.

10. The nights changed them until they overpowered them,
And the vicissitudes of time subjugated them.

11. O Messenger of Allah, if you had seen them,
Among the killed and captives,

12. From an infant prevented from suckling,
To a thirsty one given bitter water to drink,

13. And a captive being driven, stumbling,
Behind one carried for not having a mount,

14. And a weary one complaining of the pain of walking
On the palms of his wounded feet with slit skin,

15. Your eyes would have seen a sight
Causing the inner self to grieve and the eyes to tear up.

16. This is not befitting the Messenger of Allah -
O nation of oppression and insolence!

17. One who did not stop planting thorns for them,
So his family tasted the bitterness of sorrow.

18. They slaughtered the offspring like sacrificial animals,
Then drove his family like slaves.

19. Young ladies whose dawn cannot be concealed,
Of radiant complexion or fair face.

20. They cry loudly for the Messenger of Allah
In distress of journey and stumbling of steps.

21. On a day when no veil could prevent
The humiliation of the eyes and shade of tents,

22. Oppression overtook its revenge from them
And the covering of error was removed from them.

23. O martyr! By whom the pillars of faith were shaken
And the symbols of guidance fell.

24. They killed him knowing that he was the fifth of the people of the cloak,
And a killed one who died without exhibiting steadfastness or returning.

25. They washed him with the blood of stabs,
And had none to shroud him but dust.

26. Fatigued, he calls upon, with no savior for him,
A righteous father and honored grandfather.

27. And a mother whom Allah elevated for her
A standard among the women of the world.

28. Which grandfather and father does he call?
“Grandfather! Grandfather! Help me, O Father!”

29. O Messenger of Allah, O Fatima,
O Commander of the Faithful and pleased one.

30. Why did Allah not hasten for them
The turning over of the earth or the falling of the sky?

31. If they had done to the grandsons of Caesar or Choesroe
What Yazid did, it would not have been surprising!

32. How many of the children of Fatima were killed
Their necks were collared to the extent of the plain's limit.

33. And swords separated them until they left them
Like the bright lightning or branches of aromatics.

34. They carried a head that they send blessings upon
Its grandfather the most honorable, willingly and forcibly.

35. It goes around them without loosening the turban
Or undoing the fastened garment.

36. A dead one for whom Fatima cries
And her father and ‘Ali the sublime.

37. If after him the Messenger of Allah were to live,
He would have lamented over him today.

38. A group of them are the Messenger of Allah and
The remover of hardship when it becomes severe.

39. His son-in-law who sacrificed himself for him
And the sword of Allah on the day of the battle.

40. The first of the people to answer the caller
Who did not put anyone before him when he called.

41. Then his two grandsons, two martyred victims, so one was poisoned
And the other was killed by the sword.

42. And ‘Ali, his son, the analyzer, the truthful in word,
And Musa and the pleased one.

43. And ‘Ali, his father, and his son,
And the one the people await tomorrow.

44. O mountains of glory, power, and loftiness!
O lanterns of earth, light, and sublimity!

45. May Allah make long lasting the channels
Of your grief and weeping for you.

46. I do not see your sorrow forgotten,
Nor your affliction removed, no matter how long the period.

47. Time has passed and been forgiven after you,
No sadness remains sad nor tears continue flowing.

48. You are the curing ones for the blindness of ignorance,
And tomorrow the leaders to the pool of abundance.

49. The religion descended upon your home
And surpassed the people hastily and quickly.

50. Where is the protection for one seeking it through you
From a shade of Eden less than which is the heat of blazing fire?

51. Where is the clear path for one seeking
Enlightenment of the ways and the moons of night?

52. Where is the salvation through you for one hopeful
Of victory with the Messenger of Allah and success?

53. On a day he comes with a group
Turning away, refusing at the time of encounter.

54. Complaining about them to Allah, and does
A generation that he complained about succeed?

55. “My Lord! They did not support or shelter
My family, or help or defend them.

56. They changed my religion and attacked my family,
With major sins, and did not fear intimate relations.

57. If they had befriended what they befriended of my family,
The pillars of polytheism would have continued and been preserved.

58. They broke my pledge after I had made it firm,
And the covering of religion, so they did not leave a covering.

59. My sanctified ladies taken as captives,
And the most lowly of people slaughtered my daughter.

60. Do you see me with them as a man
Whose good deed they repaid when he passed away?

61. My Lord! Today, I complain to You about them.
I came as one wronged, and it is the day of judgement.”
