ليتَنيif only I لَمْnot أَكُنْhad been لعَطْفِكِto your affection نِلْتُI attained
وإلىand to ذلكَthat الوِصَالِunion وصلتُI reached
Would that I had never gained your affection,
If only I had never attained your kindness
Nor reached that union.
And reached that union
فالذيfor that which مِنِّيof me اشْتَمَلْتِyou embraced عليهِupon it
أَلِعَارٍis it for shame? ماwhat قَدْhave already عليهِupon it اشْتَمَلْتُI embraced
For what you embraced of me—
For what you have blamed me for
Is what I have embraced a cause for shame?
Is but shame I have brought upon myself
قالَsaid ذُوone possessing الجَهْلِignorance قَدْindeed حَلُمْتَyou were forbearing ولاand not أَعْI know (first part)
لَمُcompletion of 'I know' أَنِّيthat I حَلُمْتُI was forbearing حتىuntil جَهِلتُI acted rashly
The ignorant one said, 'You have been forbearing'; and I do not
The ignorant said I have become wise but I do not know
know that I was forbearing until I acted rashly.
That I had become wise until I was ignorant
لائمٌone who reproaches ليto me بجهلِهِin his ignorance ولماذاand why?
أناI وَحْدِيalone أَحْبَبْتُI loved ثُمَّthen قَتَلْتُI killed
One reproaches me in his ignorance—and why?
He blames me for my ignorance but why
I alone loved, then killed.
Did I alone love then kill
سَوْفَshall آسىI grieve طولَthroughout الحياةِlife وأبكيand I weep
كِyou (feminine object) علىover ماwhat فَعَلْتِyou did لاnot ماwhat فَعَلْتُI did
I shall grieve throughout my life and weep
I will grieve my whole life and cry over
for you over what you did, not what I did.
What you have done, not what I have done
