ماnot الذَّنْبُthe fault إلاَّexcept لجَدِّيْwith my grandfather حينَwhen وَرَّثَنيhe bequeathed to me
ما الذَّنْبُ إلاَّ لجَدِّيْ حينَ وَرَّثَني
عِلْماًknowledge وَوَرَّثَهُand he bequeathed it مِنْfrom قَبْلِbefore ذاكَthat أَبيmy father
عِلْماً وَوَرَّثَهُ مِنْ قَبْلِ ذاكَ أَبي
The fault lies only with my grandfather, when he bequeathed to me
What fault is mine if knowledge is my share,
knowledge—and before that had bequeathed it to my father.
A legacy from father and grandsire.
فالحمدُso praise للّهِto God حَمْداًpraise لاno نَفَادَend لَهُto it
فالحمدُ للّهِ حَمْداً لا نَفَادَ لَهُ
ماnot المَرْءُa man إلاَّexcept بِمَاby what يَحْويْhe possesses مِنَof النّسَبِlineage
ما المَرْءُ إلاَّ بِمَا يَحْويْ مِنَ النّسَبِ
So praise be to God, praise without end.
Thanks be to God whose praises know no end
A man is defined only by the lineage he possesses.
For gifts determined by ancestry and race.
