خُذْtake ياO غلامُlad عنانَthe rein طَرْفِكَof your steed فاثْنِهِthen turn it

Take, lad, your steed’s rein and turn it
Away from me, for wine has seized my reins.
سُكْرانِtwo intoxications سُكْرُintoxication of هوىlove وسكرُand intoxication of مُدامَةٍwine
أَنّىhow يفيقُsobers up فَتىًa youth بهِwithin him سُكرانِtwo intoxications
Two intoxications: the intoxication of love and the intoxication of wine.
How can a youth sober up with two intoxications within him?
ماnot الشّأْنُthe trouble وَيْحَكَalas for you فيin فراقِparting from فَريقهمْtheir company
الشّأْنُthe trouble ويحكَalas for you فيin جُنونِthe madness of جَنَانيmy heart
The trouble, alas for you, is not in parting from their company;
The trouble, alas for you, is in the madness of my heart.
