فَتراهُمُso you see them صَرْعَىfallen وقَدْand indeed صَعَقَتْهُمُshe has struck them senseless
بكُؤوسِهاwith her cups فيin عدَّةِthe number of الأَمْواتِthe dead
So you see them fallen, for she has struck them senseless
You see them lying dead, thunderstruck
With her cups, counted among the dead.
By her cups, among the ranks of the dead.
ياoh حَبّذَاhow splendid هُمْthey مَيِّتِينَdead وحَبّذَاand how splendid
ذاكَthat المَمَاتُdeath لَهُمْfor them فَخَيْرُso the best مَمَاتِdeath
Oh, how splendid they are when dead, and how splendid
Would that they were dead! Would that
That death is for them—the best of deaths!
That death for them were the best of deaths!
مَوْتٌa death تَنَافَسُهُvie for it الملوكُthe kings ويُشْتَرَىand is bought
بِعَقَائِلٍwith precious possessions تُلْدٍinherited ومُطّرَفَاتِand newly acquired
A death that kings vie for, and that is bought
A death for which kings vie, and which is bought
With precious possessions, inherited and newly acquired.
With lineages long, and gilded trappings.
مَوْتٌa death أَعَزُّdearer مِنَthan الحَياةِlife عَلَيهمُto them
وأَلَذُّand sweeter فيin الأَفْوَاهِthe mouths واللّهَواتِand the uvulas
A death dearer to them than life,
A death nobler than life itself to them,
And sweeter to their mouths and uvulas.
And sweeter on the tongue, by God!
