قُلْsay لهَضِيمِto the slender الكَشْحِthe waist مَيّاسِgracefully swaying
اِنْتَقَضَwas broken العَهْدُthe pledge مِنَby النّاسِthe people
Say to the slender-waisted, gracefully swaying one:
Tell the scornful slanderer,
People have broken the pledge.
The covenant of people is broken.
ياO طَلْعَةَshoot الآسِof the myrtle التيwhich لَمْdid not تَمِدْsway
إلاَّexcept that أَذَلّتْit humbled قُضُبَthe boughs الآسِof the myrtle
O myrtle shoot, which never swayed
O rising of misfortune that extended
without putting the myrtle boughs to shame:
Only to humiliate the staffs of misfortune.
وَثِقْتَyou trusted بالكَأْسِin the cup وشُرَّابِهاand its drinkers
وحَتْفُand the doom أَمْثالِكَof those like you فيin الكاسِthe cup
You trusted the cup and its drinkers,
You trusted in the wine cup and its pourer,
yet the doom of those like you lies in the cup.
While the like of you is destined for the cup.
وحالُand the condition مِيمَاسٍof Mimas وياand O بُعْدَdistance مَاwhat lies
بينَbetween مغيِثيكَyour rescuers ومِيمَاسِand Mimas
And Mimas's condition—oh, how great the distance
And the state of Mayyas, oh how far
between your rescuers and Mimas!
Between your helper and Mayyas!
تَقْطيعُthe breaking أَنْفاسِكَof your breaths فيin أًثْرِهِمْtheir wake
ومَلْكِهِمْand their sway قَطّعَcut off أَنْفاسِيmy breaths
Your gasping in their wake
My panting breath among them
and under their sway has cut off my breath.
And their kingdom cut off my breath.
لابَأْسَno harm مَولايَmy lord علىeven though أَنّهاit is
نِهَايَةُthe utmost المَكْرُوهِof adversity والبَاسِand distress
No matter, my lord, though this is
No harm, my Master, that they
the utmost in adversity and distress.
Are the end of hate and harm.
هيَthey are اللّياليthe nights ولهاand they have دَوْلَةٌa turn of power
وَوَحْشَةٌand loneliness مِنْfrom بَعْدِafter إِيناسِcompanionship
Such are the nights, and they have their sway,
They are the nights, and for them is decline
and loneliness after companionship.
And loneliness after intimacy.
بَيْنَاjust when أَنافَتْthey rose high وعَلَتْand rose بالفتَىwith the young man
إِذْsuddenly قِيلَit was said حَطّتْهُthey cast him down علىon الرَّاسِthe head
Just as they lift a young man and raise him high,
While youth turned away and rose above the lad,
word comes: they have cast him down headfirst.
It was said his glory settled on the head.
فَالْهُso amuse yourself ودَعْand leave عنكَaway from you أحادِيثَهمtheir talk
سَيُصْبِحُwill become الذَّاكِرُthe one who remembers كالنّاسِيlike the one who forgets
So amuse yourself, and leave their talk aside;
So leave him and stop talking about them,
he who remembers will become like him who forgets.
The rememberer will become like the forgetful.
