أَيّها السّائلُ عَنِّي

أَيّها السّائلُ عَنِّي

لَسْتَ بِي أَخْبَرَ مِني

لَسْتَ بِي أَخْبَرَ مِني

O you who ask about me,

O you who ask about me

You know me no better than I do.

You know me not better than I know myself

أَنا إِنْسانٌ بَراني اللّهُ

أَنا إِنْسانٌ بَراني اللّهُ

في صُورَةِ جِنِّي

في صُورَةِ جِنِّي

I am a human being whom God created

I am a human being created by Allah

In the form of a jinn.

In the form of a jinni

بَلْ أَنا الأَسْمَجُ في العَيْ

بَلْ أَنا الأَسْمَجُ في العَيْ

نِ فَدَعْ عنكَ التّظَنِّي

نِ فَدَعْ عنكَ التّظَنِّي

Rather, I am the most repulsive to the eye—

Rather I am the clearest in the eye

So put your conjectures aside.

So cease your suspicions about me

أَنا لا أَسْلَمُ مِنْ نَفْ

أَنا لا أَسْلَمُ مِنْ نَفْ

سي فَمَنْ يَسْلَمُ مِنِّي

سي فَمَنْ يَسْلَمُ مِنِّي

I am not safe from my own

I do not submit from my own soul

self; who, then, is safe from me?

So who can make me submit
