Kalb is my tribe, and Kalb are the best of those born

to Eve, among illustrious Arabs and among non-Arabs.

And she reproached us, though no blood went unavenged at Uhud,

nor at Mu'ta, while the faith had not yet learned to shoot.

On the morning of Mu'ta, idolatry was middle-aged,

while faith was beardless, not yet grown enough to have a wet dream.

And on the day of Siffin, after al-Khariba, how much

blood was shed unavenged to uphold the faith, blood after blood!

And at the Euphrates, as ransom for the Grandson, were left

our torn limbs amid the fray, meat upon a butcher's board.

On the morning when piety's ostrich rose and fled,

and truth's thunderbolts warned of retribution.

If you frown at blood of ours poured out there,

then we have kept Islam's blood from spilling—so smile.

So sit and stand, knowing that, were you to encircle her

with anyone but Ahmad, you could neither sit nor stand.

Hisn raised over them a fortress of honor,

whose two mountains tremble with vengeance and with blessings.

When their horses set out, bearing them at a trot

to give aid, they outstrip death's appointed hours with swift strides.

How often they exposed white, honored hands

to poverty, from having so long rescued others from want!

Lions who regard death, which carries their very selves

to the dust, as a lifetime that leads to old age.
