إذاwhen نَزَحَتْgrew distant دارٌa home وخَفَّand departed قَطينُresidents
إذا نَزَحَتْ دارٌ وخَفَّ قَطينُ
Have I no helper against relentless longing,
Is there no help for me against relentless yearning
When a home lies far away and its dwellers have departed?
When the abode shifts and the companions grow few?

When they recall the days of al-Sham, I am drawn back
When they mention the days of Damascus, longing
To those in the reaches of al-Sham by longing.
Returns me to those I knew in Damascus’ arms.

على نَجْمِهِ أَلاَّ يَعُودَ يَمينُ
This night has grown so long that it is as though
This night has dragged on until it seems
Its star were under oath not to return.
Its star is loath to return at dawn.
فواللّهِso, by God ماnot فارَقْتُهاI parted from her عنout of قِلىًhatred لهاfor her
فواللّهِ ما فارَقْتُها عن قِلىً لها
ولكنَّbut ماwhat يُقْضَىis decreed فَسَوْفَso will يكونُcome to pass
ولكنَّ ما يُقْضَى فَسَوْفَ يكونُ
By God, I did not leave her out of hatred for her,
By God, I did not willingly part from it
But what is decreed will surely come to pass.
But what is willed shall come to be.
