حَمائِمُdoves وُرْقٌgray فيin حِمَىthe shelter of وَرَقٍleaves خُضْرِgreen
لهاthey have مُقَلٌeyes تُجْرِيmake flow الدُّمُوعَthe tears ولاyet do not تَجْرِيflow
Gray doves in the shelter of green leaves.
Doves are leaves in the protection of green leaves
They have eyes that make tears flow, yet shed none.
They have eyelids that shed tears but do not shed blood
تَكَلّفْنَthey undertook إِسْعادَsharing the grief of الحَزينِthe grieving man إذاwhen بَكَىhe wept
وإِنْand although كُنَّthey are لاnot يَدْرينَknow كيفَwhat ... is like جَوىburning anguish الصَّدرِthe breast
They undertook to mourn with the grieving man whenever he wept,
They affect to please the sorrowful when he weeps
Though they do not know what the breast's burning anguish is like.
Though they know not how the breast is consumed with pain
لهاthey have حُرَقٌburning sorrows لَوْif أَنَّthat خَنْساءَKhansa أَعْوَلَتْshe wailed
بِهِنَّwith them لأَدَّتْshe would have conveyed حَقَّthe due of صَخْرٍSakhr إلىto صَخْرِstone
They have burning sorrows; had Khansa wailed
Burns have they, did Khansa wail with them
With these, she would have carried Sakhr's due lament even to stone.
She would fully repay Sakhr's due against Sakhr
فقلتُso I said لِنَفْسيto myself هاbehold هُناhere طَلَبُseeking الأسَىsorrow
ومَعْدِنُهُand its source إِنْif فاتَنيeludes me طَلَبُthe pursuit of الصَّبْرِpatience
So I said to myself: behold, here sorrow is to be sought,
So I said to myself, here is the goal of sorrow
And here is its source, if my pursuit of patience fails.
And its mine, though the goal of patience elude me
ظَلْلِناwe lingered (vocalization uncertain) ولَوْand if أُعْطَىI am granted المُنَىwishes لَصَحِبْتُهاI would accompany them
حَمَاماًas a dove ولَوْand if تُعْطَىthey are granted المُنَىwishes لَرَوَتْthey would recite شِعْرِيmy poetry
We lingered; were I granted my wishes, I would accompany them
Our shade though death be given I'd accompany them
As a dove; and were their wishes granted, they would recite my poetry.
A dove, and were death given, would water my hair
