Arrows of glances from the bows of eyebrows

Have threaded sorrow through the heart from every side.

On the morning when we wrote letters upon cheeks

With the tips of pens of streaming tears,

They gleam upon our throat-hollows and upper chests,

And our eyelids send them to our breastbones.

Our tongues are mute, as though anklets

Mirrored the dark eyes of fair, full-bosomed maidens.

Separation has spared you reproaching the tormented one; desist,

Given what you wished upon him: parting from loved ones.

Love has bent him with longing, until it seems

That longing stings like scorpions within his entrails.

He spends the night tossing upon the bedding of wasting sickness,

With little solace and many afflictions,

A prey to sorrows, cast down in their grasp,

Between their beast's two fangs and claws.

    وقد أَحكمتْ عينايَ رَعْيَ الكواكبِ

    My two friends, patience has betrayed me, and sleep has ceased;

My eyes have mastered keeping watch upon the stars.

My two friends, ask the stars of darkness about my eyes:

They will tell of sleeplessness broad of shoulder.

My two friends, how many a burning grief I have concealed,

Only for my tears to reveal it to my companion's eye,

And rend a veil within my breast that had been lowered

Over longing, until my relatives rebuked me.

How revealing are streaming tears when they flow,

And how subtly they disclose what lies concealed!

I shall line my eyes, from afar, with a glance

Toward her fire, in defiance of the watcher.

Can you deny me a glance, if I attain it,

Even if the jealous outsider's soul should perish?

A distant gaze was scant fare for my eyes,

And I accepted it only when my wishes proved unattainable.

So I soothed myself with what could content me,

And turned away like one hated and estranged,

In sincerity, devotion, and preservation of affection

For a noble pledge that joins and never severs.

Within my own soul I have folded away desires

For her toward whom my need and wishes turn.

She has a kohl-dark eye from the oryx of the sands,

    And a moustache with basil's green-dark hue.

As though a skillful boy had drawn it for her,

And it emerged like half a ṣād in a scribe's hand.

O my slayer, I, for my part, am peaceable,

And accept what you accept, no combatant.

But my people have a claim upon your people,

And over it their battalions clash.

If you kill me, you treacherously stir up war

Against us; reflect, and consider the consequences.

If the beloved's face is mine alone,

I shall unfold what I concealed among the saddlebags.

Otherwise, the secret stays closely hidden with me,

Buried through the passing of departing nights,

Lest the slanderers find delight for their eyes,

Or find in us a fault for any faultfinder.

They have claimed that I am in love with someone else,

And shun you like an evasive deserter.

No—by the gleaming front teeth in your mouth! They

Are surely like rain brought by the palms of clouds,

Pouring forth wine, aged until it breathed

Within a stout, black vessel, like a monk

Upon a long saddle, standing, not seated,

With a cowl he keeps ready for occasions.

Time has fallen from it in tatters, so long has it stayed,

Yet it has not frayed with the wearing-out of cloaks.

Its body has clothed itself in a cloak of fire,

And another of clay, though not clinging clay.

A garment covers them both, its warp watchful,

Fine at the edges, woven of spiders' threads.

We came by night to her father amid armies of darkness,

The Pleiades' hands upon the forelocks of the western skies.

He hurried up to us, to our delight,

Pledging himself for us, greeting us like a kinsman.

I said to him, "Bring the wine, for we

Have been devoted to it since our riding-camels' departure."

He rolled up both sleeves and hastened

Toward shaggy standing vessels, erect like monuments.

He rushed at the farthest and stained its waist

With a winglike gush of blood from its belly.

He came hurrying with the bottle, laughing,

Proud of it, rejoicing, not disappointed.

As though powdered musk lay within its sides,

When it flashed, tearing through the robe of darkness.

As though the cup's fragrance, beside its cloak,

Were aloeswood smiling in the breasts of sanctuaries.

    As though lovers' tears shimmered

In its goblets, flowing over every drinker.

Truly, I have been only stricken by you, drowned in you,

And I desire no woman other than you.

Then Time shot me from the bow of your estrangement

With its sorrow-laden arrows that strike true.

So my eyes sleep little, through a grief that keeps me waking,

And long-tailed thought that toys with my heart.
