May I not die before you; rather, may you and I live together,

Nor may I remain alive to see the day you die.

But let us live as we desire and hope to,

And may God, through us, rub our slanderer's nose in the dust.

Until, when the days of our allotted span are spent,

And the moment of our day that had passed us by arrives,

We shall both die like two boughs of a bān tree that wither,

After putting forth leaves and flourishing for a time,

In the blink of an eye, so that I taste no grief

Until death, nor do you taste any either.

Then peace be upon us in our resting places,

Until we return to the scales of our Maker.

And if we attain His pardon, eternity will unite us,

If He wills—or else, if He wills, He will cast us into blazing fire,

Until all who dwell there forever say:

Oh, if only we had been lovers together!
