Drink with pleasure amid roses and rosy hues.
Drink joyfully, amid roses and fragrance,
And do not trade the pleasure at hand for what is absent.
And seek not a sweet odour that comes with loss.
نَحنُwe الشُّهودُthe witnesses وخَفْقُand the strumming of العُودِthe lute خاطِبُنَاour matchmaker

We are the witnesses, and the lute’s strumming is our matchmaker.
We are the witnesses, the lute's stroke our suitor,
We wed the son of a cloud to the daughter of a grape cluster.
Wedding the son of a cloud to a cluster's daughter.
كَأْسٌa cup إذاwhen أَبْصَرَتْit sees فيamong القومِthe company مُحْتَشِماًa bashful man
قالsays السُّرورُjoy لهto him قُمْrise غيرَnot مَطْرودِdriven out
A cup—when it sees a bashful man among the company,
When the cup spies a modest one amid the throng,
Joy says to him, “Rise—you are not being driven out.”
“Arise,” joy says, “you are not to be turned away.”
أَمَاdo you not تَرَىsee الحُسْنَbeauty والإِحْسانَand goodness قَدْindeed جُمِعَاhave both been joined
فاشْرَبْso drink فإنّكَfor you are فيat عُرْسٍa wedding وفيand at عِيدِa festival
Do you not see that beauty and goodness have been joined?
Do you not see, beauty and kindness are joined here?
So drink, for you are at a wedding and a festival.
Drink then, for you are at a feast and celebration.
