وعلىand to الفَمِthe mouth المُتَبَسِّمِsmiling المُتقبّلِreceptive to kisses
Drink to the face of the approaching beloved,
Drink from the face of the beloved who comes near,
and to the smiling mouth, receptive to kisses.
And from the smiling, accepting lips,
شُرباًdrinking يُذَكِّرُbrings to mind كلَّevery حُبٍّlove آخِرٍlater
غَضٍّfresh and tender ويُنْسيand makes one forget كُلَّevery حُبٍّlove أَوّلِearlier
A draught that brings every later love to mind—
A drink that reminds of every other love,
fresh and tender—and makes you forget every earlier love.
Fresh, and makes one forget every early love.
نَقِّلْmove فُؤادَكَyour heart حيثُwherever شِئْتَyou wish فلنْthen never تَرىyou will see
كَهَوىًlike a passion جَديدٍnew أَوْor كَوَصْلٍlike a union مُقْبِلِforthcoming
Move your heart wherever you wish—you will never find
Move your heart wherever you wish, you will not see,
anything like a new passion or a union yet to come.
A new love or an impending union.
ماnot إنْindeed أَحِنُّI yearn إلىfor خَرابٍa ruin مُقْفِرٍdesolate

I do not yearn for a desolate ruin
When I yearn for a desolate, empty ruin,
whose landmarks have faded, as though it had never been inhabited.
Its features seem as though they were never inhabited.
مَقَتِيmy loathing لِمَنْزلِيَfor my home الذيwhich اسْتَحدثْتُهُI newly established it
أَمّاas for الذيthe one that وَلّىhas passed فليسَthen it is not بِمَنْزِليmy home
My loathing is for the home I newly established;
I despise my house that I originated,
as for the one now past, it is no home of mine.
As for the one who turned away, it is not my house.
