لَمّاwhen نَظَرْتِyou looked إِلَيَّat me عَنْthrough حَدَقِthe eyes of المَهَاthe oryx
وَبَسَمْتِand you smiled عنrevealing مُتَفَتّحِthe bloom of النُّوَّارِthe flowers
When you looked at me with oryx eyes,
And smiled, revealing flowers in bloom,
وعَقَدْتِand you tied بينَbetween قَضِيبِa branch of بانٍa bān tree أهْيَفٍslender
وكَثِيبِand a dune of رَمْلٍsand عُقْدَةَthe knot of الزُّنّارِthe girdle
And tied, between a slender bān branch
And a dune of sand, the girdle’s knot,
عَفَّرْتُI rubbed in dust خَدِّيmy cheek فيin الثّرىthe earth لكِfor you طائِعاًwillingly
وعَزَمْتُand I resolved فيكِfor your sake علىupon دُخُولِentering النّارِthe Fire
I willingly rubbed my cheek in the dust for you,
And resolved, for your sake, to enter the Fire.
