ومَحْجُوبةand a secluded woman فيin الخِدْرِthe curtained chamber عنْfrom كُلِّevery ناظِرٍonlooker
ولَوْand if بَرَزَتْshe emerged ماnot ضَلَّlost his way بالليلِat night مَنْwhoever يَسْرِيtravels by night
And veiled in her secluded chamber, hidden from every gaze,
And a woman secluded in the curtained chamber from every gaze;
were she to come forth, no traveler by night would lose his way.
And were she to emerge, no night traveler would lose his way.
يُقَطِّعُtears apart قلبيmy heart حُسْنُbeauty خالٍa mole بخَدِّهاon her cheek
إذاwhen سَفَرَتْshe lifts the veil عنهfrom it تَنَغّمَit sings melodiously بالسِحْرِwith enchantment
The beauty of a mole upon her cheek rends my heart;
The beauty of a mole on her cheek tears my heart apart;
when she unveils it, it sings with enchantment.
When she lifts the veil from it, it sings with enchantment.
لَخَالٌsurely a mole بذاتِon the woman with الخالِthe mole أَحْسَنُmore beautiful مَنْظَراًin appearance
مِنَthan النُّقْطَةِthe spot السّوْداءِblack فيin وَضحِthe radiance البَدْرِthe full moon
Surely a mole upon the mole-bearing beauty is lovelier to behold
Surely a mole on the woman who bears it is lovelier to behold
than the black dot in the full moon’s radiance.
Than the black spot in the full moon’s radiance.
