أصبحتُI have become مُلْقىًlaid low فيin الفراشِthe bed سَقيماill
أَجِدُI find النّسيمَthe breeze مِنَbecause of السّقامِillness سَموماa scorching wind
I have come to lie sick upon my bed;
In my illness, I find the breeze a scorching wind.
ماءٌwater مِنَfrom العَبَراتِtears حَرَّىparched أرْضُهُits earth
لَوْif كانَit had been مِنْfrom مَطَرٍrain لكانَit would have been هَزيماtorrential
Water of tears, its earth parched—
Had it been rain, it would have fallen in torrents.
وبَلابِلٌand sorrows لَوْif أَنّهُنَّthat they مآكلٌfoods
لَمْwould not تُخطىءِmiss الغِسْلينَthe foul discharge of Hell والزَّقُّوماand zaqqum, Hell's bitter fruit
And sorrows—if they were food—
Would be none other than ghislin and zaqqum.

And sleep that terrifies me has crept in by night; were it
Shade, it would be burning heat and pitch-black smoke.
مَرَّتْpassed بقلبيthrough my heart ذِكْرَياتُmemories بنيthe sons of الهُدىguidance
فنسيتُso I forgot منهاbecause of them الرَّوْحَrepose والتَّهويماand dozing
Memories of the sons of guidance passed through my heart,
So because of them I forgot repose and dozing.
ونَظَرْتُand I beheld سِبْطَthe grandson of مُحَمّدٍMuhammad فيat كَرْبُلاKarbala
فَرْداًalone يُعانيhe endures حُزْنَهُhis grief المَكْظُوماpent-up
And I beheld Muhammad's grandson at Karbala,
Alone, enduring his pent-up grief.
تَنْحوُaim at أَضَالِعَهُhis ribs سُيوفُthe swords of أُمَيّةٍUmayya
فتراهُمُso you see them الصَّمْصُومَthe keen sword فالصَّمْصُوماthen the next keen sword
Umayya's swords aim at his ribs,
So you see them, keen sword after keen sword.
فالجِسْمُso the body أَضْحَىcame to be فيon الصَّعيدِthe bare earth مُوَزَّعاًscattered
والرَّأْسُand the head أَمْسَىcame to be فيupon الصِّعادِthe spears كَريماnoble
So his body lay scattered on the bare earth,
And his head stood noble upon the spears.
