They said, “Peace be upon you, O ruins!”
I said, “Greeting the timeworn ruin is absurd.”

The wretch turned aside, seeking decaying camp remains,
But my eye desires a wine jar and bridal canopies.

أَطْلِقْopen يَديْكَyour two hands فإنَّfor indeed بينَbetween يَدَيْكَyour two hands ماthat which
يُرْدِيهُماwill destroy them both ووراءَand beyond حالِكَyour state حالُanother state
Open your hands, for before you lies what
Will destroy them both; and beyond your state lies another state.
قَدْmay تَسْلَمُsurvive الأَوْكالُthe weaklings وهيَthough they are مَواكِلٌeasy prey
للتُّرَّهاتِto trifles وتُقْتَلُand are slain الأَبْطالُthe heroes
Weaklings may survive, though they are easy prey
To trifles, while heroes are slain.
ورجالُand the men of هذيthese النّائباتِcalamities وإِنْeven if رَأَوْاthey experience
شَظَفاًprivation مِنَfrom الأَيّامِthe days فهيَyet they are رِجَالُmen
And the men who face these calamities, though they suffer
Privation from time, remain men nonetheless.
