And a shapely woman—whenever she sways her waist-wrap,

she is a bough, and in stature a slender branch.

The night-roaming moon is her brother, and she

indeed sometimes rises before him, and he vanishes.

I say to her, while night lets down its curtains,

and love's bough is tender in growth and fresh,

and we are alone together there, within a waist-wrap's fold:

“With you, life is sweet, O adornment of women.

    وأَنْتِ الهَوى أُدْعَى لَهُ فَأُجِيبُ

    You are indeed all I long for, O adornment of every lovely woman;

and you are love: I am called to it, and I answer.”

She said, “Yes—if, other than us, you have no

beloved in Baghdad among the people of the palaces.”
